Eodon

On the Forest Moon of Endor, one could find the Eodons, a species of sentient pachydermoids. These sizable beings, characterized by their blue-gray skin and prehensile trunks, were perhaps most recognized by the other inhabitants of Endor for their elaborate, lengthy tusks. The Ewoks residing in Bright Tree Village, for instance, held the belief that Eodon tusks possessed significant magical powers and remarkable beauty. This perception led to Eodons frequently facing the issue of others coveting their tusks, a reality that one particular member of the species experienced prior to 3 ABY. This specific Eodon's tusks ultimately came into the possession of a merchant by the name of Mooth, who subsequently offered them for sale at his trading post. The Eodon eventually made its way to Mooth's establishment, demanding the return of its tusks, a request that was dutifully fulfilled by a group of four young Ewoks who had recently acquired them from the trader.

Biology and appearance

Eodons were sentient pachydermoids of considerable size, possessing a height that allowed them to observe the world through the window of a two-story structure. Their head and neck extended horizontally from the body, projecting from a prominent, ridged backbone. Blue-gray skin covered the majority of their body, with a lighter shade appearing beneath the trunk and inside the ears. Distinctive features of each Eodon included a large head adorned with two bony protrusions at the top. Situated below these were a pair of sunken, pink eyes, flanked by broad, flat ears. A long, prehensile trunk was positioned below the eyes, serving as a versatile tool for environmental manipulation and housing two slender, pink nostrils essential for breathing. A wide mouth, capable of producing loud, resonant vocalizations, was located beneath the trunk. From this opening also emerged two elongated, hollow tusks, colored brown at their base and transitioning to an ivory white hue with scattered brown spots as they curved towards a final brown band situated a few centimeters from their sharp tips. The Ewoks specifically regarded Eodon tusks as uniquely beautiful and exotic.

Society and culture

At least some Eodons inhabited the Forest Moon of Endor, where they engaged with other sentient beings, including the trader Mooth. They were familiar to the Ewoks of Bright Tree Village, who believed their tusks possessed magical properties and great beauty, making them highly desirable items. This often led to Eodons having to contend with others' desire for their tusks, even when they preferred to keep them for themselves. Eodons demonstrated the ability to learn and communicate in Ewokese.

History

Mooth persuaded four youthful Ewoks into a contest for a set of Eodon tusks.

During the events of 3 ABY, an Eodon residing on Endor experienced the loss of its tusks, which eventually ended up in the hands of a merchant named Mooth. At his trading post, the merchant offered the tusks for purchase, eventually catching the attention of a group of young Ewoks—Wicket W. Warrick, Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka, Latara, and Teebo—who expressed their interest in acquiring them. Mooth, feeling unwell at the time and recognizing an opportunity to increase his sales, proposed a competition: the Ewok who sold the most of his wares that day would win the Eodon tusks. The Ewoks engaged in the competition, but Mooth struggled to determine a clear winner, leading to disagreements among the Ewoks regarding the prize. The Eodon who had originally owned the tusks then arrived and successfully reclaimed them.

Behind the scenes

In "Hard Sell," an episode of the animated series Ewoks, penned by Michael Reaves and initially broadcast on October 25, 1986 during the show's second season, an Eodon makes an appearance. While the cartoon hints at various potential uses for Eodon tusks, it provides limited details about the species itself. The voice of the unidentified Eodon is provided by an uncredited actor.

The ultimate origin of Endor's Eodons remains unaddressed by available sources. However, the sourcebook Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds puts forward the idea that only Ewoks and Yuzzums evolved indigenously on the Forest Moon. Conversely, Castaways of Endor, another source, includes Duloks among the native species and suggests that numerous other sentient inhabitants of Endor arrived from other planets. These sources, along with the article Endor and the Moddell Sector, reveal that shipwrecks were particularly common on the moon due to a shroud of space debris and a substantial gravity shadow emitted by the gas giant Endor.
