Escape from Balis-Baurgh

title: "Escape from Balis-Baurgh"

In February of 1994, West End Games released the short story "Escape from Balis-Baurgh" within Star Wars Adventure Journal 1. Paul Balsamo penned this tale, which centers around an Ewok named Grael and Junas Turner. These two characters find themselves captured by the forces of the Galactic Empire and subsequently imprisoned on Balis-Baurgh, a completely automated penal colony. A key aspect of this story is its unique narrative perspective: it is told in the first person by an Ewok who lacks comprehension of sophisticated technology.

Plot summary

Before bedtime, the Ewok Grael recounts a story to his son, Ponto. The story describes Grael's hunting trip for a Yootak, which leads him to discover Captain Junas Turner, a member of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Mistaking Junas for a highly intelligent animal, Grael attempts to guide him back to the Tribe Panshee village. However, their journey is cut short by the arrival of Stormtroopers, who capture them both.

The Imperial forces transport the rebel and the Ewok to Balis-Baurgh, an Imperial detention facility. Initially overwhelmed by the unfamiliar surroundings, Grael gradually begins to learn Galactic Basic Standard and decipher the workings of the prison, which is largely managed by droids under the direction of a 4XB Programmer Droid. Grael is then introduced to Lon and Becker, two more captured rebels. He starts to believe that Tribe Panshee should support "Tribe Rebellion" against "Tribe Empire." Junas informs Grael about the Empire's construction of a devastating weapon near Endor, emphasizing the urgent need to relay this information to the Rebellion.

Using his pan flute, Grael manages to replicate the command tones of the 4xB, enabling him and Junas to escape. However, they are compelled to leave Lon and Becker behind to ensure the news of the Death Star reaches the Rebel Alliance. They successfully deliver the crucial information to the Rebels and return to Endor to participate in the victory celebration.

Grael concludes his story to his son and prepares for sleep. Their plan for the following morning involves a joint effort with Junas to rescue Lon and Becker.
