Federal Era
The Federal Era commenced in 1582 BBY (11,138 in the Tapani calendar). This pivotal moment occurred when a group of military leaders orchestrated a coup, transferring the sector's governance to a collective of reformers.
These reformers, hailing from nearly every noble house, established a federation uniting the planets of the former empire. This novel federal government was overseen by a Prime Minister, chosen by a parliament located on Procopia. This governmental structure was less centralized than the prior Imperial regime, granting increased authority to the leadership of individual houses.
The Great Council subsequently took over the election of the Prime Minister within the Tapani Federation. Throughout the fifteen centuries of the Federal Era, the balance of power fluctuated among the houses as leaders formed coalitions within the Great Council, securing their election to the Prime Minister position. While most of these leaders originated from Pelagia or Mecetti, occasionally, effective leaders from the lesser houses also rose to prominence. During this period of Tapani history, several houses experienced both ascensions and declines, and two houses completely abandoned the sector in pursuit of greater prospects.
This Federal Era also brought about transformations in the then-underdeveloped worlds near the Herglic border. These outlying worlds, established during the Dynastic Era, were initially regarded as a fresh source of raw materials for the sector's high-consumption planets. However, around 2203 BBY, Republic scouts discovered a new trade route that shortened the established Rimma hyperlane by several days, resulting in a dramatic and unexpected economic boom for these worlds. This new route channeled significant wealth and influence into the coffers of the periphery worlds it traversed, as well as the systems along the spacelanes connecting to the Shapani Bypass, causing the Great Houses to compete for control over these worlds. This region of space became known as the Freeworlds Territory, as it was determined that no single house would claim ownership of any of the worlds, similar to the arrangement with Procopia. As time went on, the Freeworlds grew increasingly self-reliant and ambitious. Eventually, they nationalized the interests of the Houses, selling them off to private investors, and achieved complete independence from Expanse rule. The five most powerful worlds formed a League to collaborate on setting tariffs, coordinating defense strategies, and establishing other high-level agreements.
Finally, the Tapani sector integrated into the Galactic Republic during the Federal Era. In 1486 BBY (11,234 Tapani calendar), Procopia dispatched its initial representatives to the Senate and was formally recognized as a sector within the Republic. Several members of House Pelagia were inducted into the Jedi Order, establishing a lineage strong in the Force. Members of the nobility frequently journeyed to the Core to conduct business, and ambassadors cultivated alliances and connections with prominent Core worlds like Alderaan and Corellia. Numerous Tapani expatriates resided on Core worlds such as Coruscant, and members of the Galactic Senate wielded considerable influence and authority in galactic affairs. Although the Great Council maintained representation on Coruscant, the nobility generally regarded the Republic as a commercial necessity and held a disdainful view of the broader civilization.
