Destruction of the Pakuuni Pirates

Prelude

During the Battle of Hoth, the Pakuuni system was plagued by both Pirates and Smugglers, which made galactic trade a perilous undertaking, even deadly. After obtaining leftover station components from the abandoned depot on the planet Argoon, Vice Admiral Thrawn tasked Commander Buckeye and the Nebulon-B2 frigate Ludwick with the objective of eradicating a local pirate establishment. The Pakuuni Pirates had amassed a considerable collection of supplies, Corvettes, BTL Y-wing starfighters, and Z-95 Headhunters. Imperial Intelligence had suspicions that these pirate groups were being supported by Rebel spacecraft. Furthermore, members belonging to the Secret Order of the Emperor suggested that searching the containers might uncover illicit goods, thus necessitating their capture.

The battle

The frigate Ludwick initiated the attack by deploying three formations of TIE Bombers. These Bombers commenced their assault on the Corvettes Leach, Clavier, and Grapler, prompting the pirate Z-95s and Y-wings to move in for an interception. In response to the losses suffered by the TIE bomber squads, TIE/LN starfighter group Theta Squadron was launched, as they were better suited for aerial combat with the enemy's shielded fighters. Maarek Stele, who led the TIE bomber group Alpha Squadron, diverted his course to inspect the pirate containers during the engagement. Stele discovered Rebels concealed within one of the containers. The Assault Transport Tiger was dispatched from the Ludwick to apprehend the Rebel fugitives. Just as predicted, Rebel starfighters appeared as the last of the container housing the Rebel Advisors was being boarded and the Rebels were captured, the container was then destroyed. With their primary objective achieved, the Imperial Bombers retreated back to the hangar, leaving the Rebel fighters to contend with the interceptor craft and the Ludwick's turbolasers.

Aftermath

With the pirate stronghold obliterated, the path was cleared for the establishment of a new space station, enabling the flourishing of trade. Subsequently, the Ludwick received orders to maintain its position and await the arrival of Thrawn with the necessary construction materials.

The Secret Order, recognizing the Rebel Alliance's significant presence in the region, initiated the interrogation of the prisoners to gather more intelligence regarding their foothold within the Pakuuni System.

Behind the scenes

This particular battle is featured in the PC game Star Wars: TIE Fighter. It represents the second mission within the third Battle. This article's information is based on the "Medium" difficulty setting. On "Hard" difficulty, the player must contend with X-wings that will launch Heavy rockets at the Ludwick and can easily deplete the ships shields and hull.
