The Galactic Barrier represented a complex collection of hyperspace anomalies found along the western border of the galaxy. Because of this barrier, exploration into the Unknown Regions was impossible following the invention of hyperdrive technology and the rise of galactic civilization, with the exception of a small number of planets that could be accessed through careful hyperspace jumps, for instance, Csilla, Ilum, and Rakata Prime. Both the Sith and the Jedi of old had knowledge of how to traverse these anomalies, but these techniques have been lost to time, leaving behind only routes found in artifacts such as Sith wayfinders and Jedi star compasses.
