In the year 3649 BBY, the Galactic Senate of the Republic gathered to choose a Supreme Chancellor, who would serve as the head of the democratic government for a period of four years. Previously, four years prior, Senator Dorian Janarus representing Coruscant had been unanimously selected by the Senate to be the Supreme Chancellor. In 3649 BBY, upon the conclusion of his four-year tenure, the Senate determined that he should continue to hold the office. Due to the candidates' concerns about potential assassination attempts by the Sith Empire, the election was a relatively minor event.
