Dorian Janarus

Dorian Janarus, a male human, held the esteemed position of Supreme Chancellor within the Galactic Republic during an era when the Sith held dominion over the galaxy. He assumed this role after a unanimous vote by the Galactic Senate, succeeding the acting chancellor, Paran Am-Ris.

As time went on, his support dwindled due to the financial burdens of reconstruction, and his military advisors grew increasingly dissatisfied with his reluctance to aggressively suppress dissent within the Republic. Nevertheless, Janarus remained committed to the Republic's fundamental ideals and endeavors. Janarus was also confronted by the Rift Alliance, a collection of influential worlds that threatened to permanently sever their connections with the Republic.

Following Janarus's death, the Senate convened an emergency session and selected Leontyne Saresh, the Governor of Taris, as his replacement.

Biography

During a period of conflict for the Galactic Republic, Janarus demonstrated unwavering dedication as a senator representing Coruscant. However, the Sith Empire brought the war to a brutal end with a surprise invasion known as the Sacking of Coruscant, during which the Sith Lord Darth Angral killed the Supreme Chancellor Berooken. In a meeting of the Galactic Senate following the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant, Janarus was unanimously chosen to succeed the interim Supreme Chancellor, Paran Am-Ris.

In the years following his inauguration, Janarus experienced a gradual erosion of support as numerous planetary governments grew weary of the costs associated with rebuilding, and his military advisors expressed increasing frustration with his unwillingness to take more forceful measures to quell sedition. Janarus consistently maintained that the Republic's core principles of freedom, justice, and self-governance were paramount, especially when contrasted with the tyrannical Sith Empire. During his time in office, Janarus established the Republic Privateer Service Corps.

During this time, Janarus also sought assistance from the Jedi High Council, particularly when the Rift Alliance, a group of significant and powerful worlds, threatened to permanently sever ties with the Republic. Janarus requested the Council to identify a skilled diplomat who could serve as an effective representative and ambassador to persuade the Rift Alliance to remain within the Republic. The initial suggestion was a powerful and notable Jedi Consular, who had recently become the third Barsen'thor in galactic history. The Barsen'thor successfully convinced the Rift Alliance to rejoin the Republic, but only after aiding them against the Empire, specifically the Children of the Emperor, enigmatic assassins and agents of the Sith Emperor who were imbued with the Emperor's thoughts and power.

Sometime after the commencement of the Galactic War, Janarus publicly denounced the actions of a bounty hunter for allegedly causing the deaths of a Jedi and Republic delegation on Nar Shaddaa, vowing to bring them to justice. Unbeknownst to Janarus, his closest advisor, Jedi Battlemaster Jun Seros was secretly manipulating the Hunter to demonstrate that the Empire would never commit to peace, having fabricated a "kilometer long" list of false crimes, many of which the Hunter was not responsible for. A 10 million credit bounty was placed on the Hunter's head, false accusations were disseminated across the HoloNet, and the Empire disavowed any connection with the Hunter, forcing them into hiding.

Darth Tormen then summoned the Hunter, offering them an opportunity to exact revenge on both Janarus and Seros. However, given their location on Coruscant, Tormen devised a plan to lure them out. Under Tormen's orders, the Hunter captured three prominent Corellian Resistance leaders, whom Tormen then compelled to publicly declare Corellia's secession from the Republic and its allegiance to the Empire. At the urging of Corellia's Prime Minister Cal Falcone, Janarus felt compelled to travel to Corellia to ratify the treaty and withdraw Republic forces. However, Seros convinced him that he could rally Corellia's Green Jedi to liberate the planet from Imperial control. The Hunter eliminated Seros and acquired his credentials, granting access to Janarus' flagship, the Founder.

The Hunter managed to commandeer a smuggler ship from the Corellia Orbital Station and piloted it toward the Founder while being pursued by three Imperial starfighters. Utilizing Seros' clearance codes, the Hunter successfully deceived the Founder into believing they were an allied vessel. Once aboard, the Hunter proceeded to destroy all ships in the hangar, sabotage the escape pods, and fight past the Supreme Guard to reach the Chancellor's office.

Upon being confronted by the bounty hunter he had wronged, Janarus expressed regret for the lives lost in his service. He then requested the Hunter to listen to his explanation, stating that he had been reviewing the costs of Seros' operation to apprehend the bounty hunter and deemed it a gross abuse of power. He admitted that while he did not condone the Hunter's actions, he understood that they were simply fulfilling their role. He explained that he had already disclosed Jun's actions to the public, effectively exonerating the Hunter of the false charges and predicted that the political fallout would result in his removal from office, regardless of the Hunter's decision. To demonstrate his sincerity, he freely offered the reports from his terminal. He even offered to grant immunity for the Hunter's true crimes in exchange for eliminating Tormen, whom he accused of being a mass murderer, citing the destruction he had inflicted on both Corellia and Rabaan. The Hunter declined his offer and killed the Chancellor.

Following Janarus's death, an emergency session of the Senate was convened, and Leontyne Saresh, the Governor of Taris and Janarus's political rival, was elected as Chancellor.

Personality and traits

Supreme Chancellor Janarus was a dedicated servant of the Republic who stood firm in upholding its ideals during a period of political turmoil. He displayed exceptional leadership qualities following the Sacking of Coruscant, uniting the people and restoring stability. However, he faced opposition from several political rivals.

In contrast to his advisor Jun Seros, who had blindly embraced deception, Janarus believed that the Republic's leaders should be committed to truth and transparency, particularly in matters of war.

Gameplay alternatives

Janarus plays a central role in Chapter III of the Bounty Hunter storyline. Players who choose the light-side path can spare his life and force him to "face the music." By following this path, the Hunter can agree to kill Darth Tormen in exchange for immunity. After completing this task, Janarus honors his agreement and states that even if his successor questions the justification, overturning the Hunter's exoneration will be more challenging. He then announces his retirement from politics, acknowledging that his involvement in arranging assassinations has compromised his principles. The Hunter has the option to encourage Janarus to maintain his honor, regardless of his future endeavors.

If spared, Janarus later utilizes his connections with his former staff and the SIS to send a message to the Hunter, informing them of Leontyne Saresh's election as his successor. While he prefers that the Hunter not become involved in the Second Great Galactic War, he requests that they intervene to stop the madness if they choose to participate.

Alternatively, the Hunter can choose to freeze Janarus and deliver him to Darth Tormen (a neutral path).
