The Gerb species, a sentient type of rabbit-like creature, originated from the lunar surface of Yavin 13, according to Legends material.
Gerbs possessed short fur coats, prominent pink ears, and large, dark eyes. Their primary mode of locomotion involved hopping and leaping, facilitated by their elongated rear legs. The species utilized their ears for both auditory perception and thermal regulation, as they contained a network of small blood vessels to release excess body heat. Furthermore, Gerbs exhibited immunity to the venomous bites of the Slith, a trait not shared by most other species.
These creatures dwelled in compact subterranean warrens, each housing approximately ten families. The Gerbs communicated using the squeaking sounds of the Gerbese language, but they also had the ability to speak Slithese, the hissing language of the serpentine Slith, another sentient species inhabiting the moon. The Gerbs and Slith coexisted peacefully, generally maintaining a state of mutual indifference. Due to their isolation on Yavin 13, neither species possessed significant knowledge of off-world technology or events. They engaged in basic agricultural practices on the limited grasslands available on the desert moon.
During their campaign to eradicate the New Jedi Order, the Yuuzhan Vong launched an invasion and seized control of the Yavin system. Beyond destroying the Jedi temple located on Yavin 4, they systematically eliminated all life on Yavin 13 and Yavin 8, leading to the complete extinction of the Gerb species.
