A flying insect, known as a glacier fly, was native to the vicinity of Echo Base located on Hoth. These glacier flies had an appearance similar to ice, and were quite small from the perspective of human eyes. They shared a symbiotic connection with another species, specifically the fork-nosed ice worm. Early in Luke Skywalker's time at Echo Base, he managed to catch one that Reyé Hollis had only glimpsed; it then perched on his open hand before he let it go.
