Gwig was a youthful male Ewok residing on the forest moon of Endor. Alongside Malani and Mookiee, he reached adulthood and was presented with his hood during the Festival of Hoods. Furthermore, he was among the young Ewoks and woklings who listened to Chirpa's tale of Logray, Morag, and the Sunstar. Gwig desired to participate in the adventures of the older Ewoks. His name was inspired by a legendary scout from Ewok folklore.
Gwig's initial introduction was as one of six 8-inch plush woklings manufactured by Kenner as a component of their Return of the Jedi toy range, and subsequently as an action figure in the Wicket the Ewok toy series from Kenner Preschool, a division of the same company.
Gwig's fictional debut occurred as a non-speaking background character in the Ewoks animated series. His name is only present on a pair of animation model cels from Nelvana; one depicts him with a green bandana, while the other shows him with a blue hood. The blue-hooded design corresponds to the unnamed character featured in "The Cries of the Trees." Both iterations of Gwig are visible within the group of young Ewoks in "Sunstar vs. Shadowstone."
