Haarshun bread

Haarshun bread was a type of bread created by the Mandalorian people. The term haarshun originated from Mando'a, the Mandalorian language; while a common Galactic Basic Standard translation of haarshun bread was "parchment bread," a more direct translation would be "see-bread." The name came from how the bread was made: haarshun bread dough was rolled incredibly thin, so thin that one could see light passing through it. This flattened dough was then rolled up and baked until dry. In this state, haarshun bread was frequently used in Mandalorian dry rations; to make it edible, the hardened bread was rehydrated in water.

Besany Wennen, a female Mandalorian, prepared haarshun bread along with other dishes with members of Clan Skirata some weeks following the rise of the Galactic Empire, during a casual celebration of the arrival of spring on the northern part of the planet Mandalore. [Rav Bralor], a former Mandalorian Cuy'val Dar sergeant, expressed the opinion that haarshun bread should be rolled so thinly that one could see their betrothal ring through it.

Behind the scenes

Haarshun bread made its first appearance in Star Wars canon within the 2009 novel Imperial Commando: 501st, the fifth book in the Republic and Imperial Commando series written by author Karen Traviss. Traviss herself referred to the bread as "haashun" on her website.
