The short, humorous story "Hate Leads to Lollipops," concerning a young Darth Maul, was written by Dave McCaig and published in Star Wars Tales 9. It can also be found within Star Wars Tales Volume 3, Star Wars: Darth Maul — Son of Dathomir, and Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: Rise of the Sith Vol. 1.
With very little in the way of spoken words, the artwork and narrative style bear a strong resemblance to children's animated shows or the Spy vs. Spy segments from Mad magazine.
During Maul's childhood, he was placed in the Happy Nerf Herder, a high-security institution for troubled youths located on Coruscant. While residing there, he participated in an escape attempt, and after successfully fleeing, he embarked on a quest to obtain a lollipop. After utilizing a cable to descend to the nearby Mon Calamari Fish Market, Maul proceeded to commandeer a hoverboard from an unsuspecting individual, inadvertently triggering an explosion in the process. He then employed the hoverboard to travel to RIB hutt, where he collided with an unidentified Hutt before absconding with a lightsaber belonging to a Jedi who happened to be dining at the establishment.
Maul then employed the stolen lightsaber to leap from the building's edge, using it to control his descent by dragging the blade along the building's facade. Despite being pursued by the Jedi, Maul ultimately landed on a granite slug clinging to the building, dropping the lightsaber in the process, before landing on an airspeeder along with the slug. The airspeeder careened out of control, eventually launching both Maul and the slug onto the roof of a building housing a lollipop store. However, before Maul could acquire his desired lollipop, he was apprehended by a Senate Guard, who escorted him to Senator Palpatine. Although the Guardsman intended to return him to the security facility, Palpatine intervened, asserting that Maul merely required proper guidance and that he would personally oversee the boy's re-education. Ultimately, Maul received his lollipop as Palpatine placed it in his mouth.
