Star Wars Tales #9 marks the ninth installment in the comic book series titled Star Wars Tales. Dark Horse Comics released it on October 10, 2001.
Hear ye, hear ye! Gather 'round, everyone! Droids and Jawas alike, brace yourselves for the clash of the ages! In this corner, a heavyweight at 220 pounds, hailing from Tatooine, the Sith's Dark Lord, formerly known as Anakin Skywalker—DARTH VADER! And in the opposing corner, a lean 175 pounds, a Jedi slayer, the Naboo Nightmare, Darth Sidious' top disciple—DARTH MAUL! Mark your calendars for September 12th, 2001, to witness the answer to the burning question: "Who reigns supreme, Vader or Maul?" Let the BATTLE commence!
Darth Maul graced the screen for roughly fifteen minutes in EPISODE I, yet his popularity endures. Without a doubt, Maul is the character our readership most desires to see further developed. How do we achieve this? Simple. Pit him against Darth Vader in a head-to-head showdown. Maul is ferocious, physical, and instinctual. Vader is composed and strategic… but still retains a faint glimmer of humanity. Both have succumbed to the dark side of the Force. Both harbor ambition. However, Sith doctrine dictates that only one can hold the ultimate position.
Following the death of Star Wars Tales' editor, Dave Land, in the previous issue, his assistant, Philip Simon, takes the reins, presenting this issue and introducing its all-Jawa creative team. As Simon delves into the forthcoming duel between Darth Vader and Maul, he begins to invent backstories for the combatants, only to be corrected by the Force ghost of Land.
