"Resurrection" is a comic book story spanning 48 pages, featured in Star Wars Tales 9 and later compiled in Star Wars Tales Volume 3. Ron Marz penned the narrative, while Rick Leonardi provided the pencils, Terry Austin the inks, Steve Dutro the lettering, and Raúl Treviño the colors. The events of this story unfold in the time leading up to the Battle of Yavin.

In this tale, Darth Vader lands on the volcanic moon known as Kalakar Six with the intention of intercepting Rebel forces who are transporting stolen schematics for the Death Star. Upon his arrival, Vader senses a strange familiarity and orders his stormtrooper squad to investigate the area. However, a mysterious assassin, wielding a red lightsaber, swiftly eliminates the stormtroopers.
Vader then proceeds into a volcano's hollowed-out interior, where he is confronted by several members of the Prophets of the Dark Side. They reveal to him that the information regarding the Rebels is false. Their true motive for summoning him is their belief that he is unworthy to serve the Emperor, declaring that he is "Not the blood of Bane". As Vader attempts to attack the prophets, he finds his path blocked by Darth Maul. The Prophets have resurrected Maul to take Vader's place at the Emperor's side, provoking Vader into a duel with the former Sith apprentice.
The two engage in a fierce battle, exchanging insults as they fight. Their duel leads them from within the volcano to a bridge spanning a river of lava. The bridge gives way, but both Sith barely avoid falling into the lava and continue their fight.
Vader succeeds in splitting his opponent's lightsaber in two, though both halves remain functional. Maul manages to strike Vader's helmet, causing him to fall to the ground. As Maul prepares to deliver the final blow, Vader uses the Force to summon his lightsaber and impales himself through the stomach, killing Maul who was behind him. Before his death, Maul asks what Vader could possibly hate enough to destroy him. Vader simply replies: "Myself."
As Vader turns his attention to the Prophets, they are suddenly electrocuted by Darth Sidious. Sidious had arrived to monitor Vader's progress, although he denies any involvement with the Prophets. He informs Vader that they must focus on stopping the Rebels with the stolen plans, and Vader obediently accompanies his master to a waiting shuttle.
