Holochex

Jabba the Hutt with a holochex board Holochex was a popular pastime on Tatooine, a strategy board game for two players. It bore some resemblances to chess, but featured a single type of playing piece and a variety of board configurations. Each player started with a dozen monster-shaped game pieces of a specific color, and the active player was indicated by the glowing edge of the board matching their color. The objective of the game was to capture the opponent's monster pieces while simultaneously attempting to jump over them with your own. These monster pieces could be moved along any straight line or diagonal, and were permitted to make double jumps. The rules stipulated that a piece must capture an opponent's piece if the opportunity arose. Victory was achieved by capturing all of the opponent's pieces. Experienced players knew that recovering from significant early losses was difficult, as successful tactics often involved sacrificing pieces and executing double jumps. Many boards included electronic assistance buttons to guide novice players by indicating possible moves and jumps.

The crime lord known as Jabba the Hutt enjoyed playing this game, and he would occasionally engage in matches with individuals in Mos Espa at his dedicated gaming area, and even offer instruction on how to play. Jabba was known as a formidable holochex player and a skilled strategist. Sometime after the Boonta Eve Classic in 32 BBY, an extra–galactic spacer took a chance at Jabba's game plaza and managed to win several holochex games against the Hutt.

Behind the scenes

Star Wars Math: Jabba's Game Galaxy, an educational video game by Lucas Learning released in 2000, featured holochex as a playable game. The game drew inspiration from the real-world game of checkers.
