Holodarts, a game utilizing hologram technology, was present as early as 0 ABY according to the year. A holodarts game could be found at the Lean Nuuti Bar and Grill restaurant, which was situated on the space station called StarForge Station. During the early part of that year, a band of pirates engaged in a game of holodarts while the Far Orbit, a EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate that previously belonged to the Imperial forces, was docked at the station; its crew having recently staged a mutinied against Imperial authority.
The initial appearance of Holodarts was in the adventure scenario Preparing for War, which was published in 1998 as part of The Far Orbit Project. This book, authored by Timothy S. O'Brien, served as a supplement for West End Games's Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. It shared a thematic connection with the earlier work Pirates & Privateers, as it continued the narrative centered around the privateering ship Far Orbit.
