Humberly González, an actress originally from Venezuela but now residing in Canada, lent her talents to portray Kay Vess. Vess is the central character in the 2024 video game titled Star Wars Outlaws. González has expressed that she sees parallels between Vess's narrative—a tale of an individual facing disadvantages yet demonstrating resilience, charisma, passion, and unwavering determination—and the experiences of the Venezuelan people. Furthermore, González voiced her hope that Vess, by showcasing both strength and vulnerability ("kinks in the armor"), would serve as an inspiration to other women, and she particularly valued the opportunity Outlaws provided her to embody a leading female role. She can also be seen in the television series Ginny & Georgia, and she is slated to appear in the upcoming 2025 film Star Trek: Section 31.
Despite the ongoing authoritarianism in Venezuela, exemplified by the ruling party's manipulation of the election results in June 2024, which denied the pro-democracy population their victory, González finds inspiration in Vess's perseverance, believing it sends a powerful message to her people that "freedom is worth fighting for." Although unable to return to Venezuela where her family remains, González is thankful for her father's sacrifices in bringing her to Canada, where she learned English and pursued her acting dreams.
Kay Vess and Nix
She identifies strongly with Kay Vess' feelings of isolation, being alone, and the subsequent need to "slowly start letting people in to help you" and learning to trust "the hard way," developing personal connections beyond just Nix based on player choices within the game. González also suggested that immigrants, people of color, and women could relate to Vess's guarded nature. Navid Khavari, the narrative director for Outlaws, shared a similar sentiment, noting that Star Wars served as a unifying force for his family during his upbringing as an immigrant.
Besides providing the voice for Kay Vess, González expressed her enjoyment of the cast and crew's enthusiasm while doing motion capture for Outlaws. She especially appreciated the action sequences that didn't require her stunt double, as well as acting on a simulated Trailblazer and Kay Vess's speeder, with crew members physically moving the sets to mimic real vehicle movement. Regarding Vess's characterization as a scoundrel, González liked that she was a "rookie" with vulnerabilities and a survival instinct that combined "fake it 'till you make it" with "trust no one." The actress also mentioned Vess's affinity for creatures and non-humans, expressing her desire to see Vess interact with ND-5, C-3PO, and R2-D2, referring to Nix as being like her own dog of fourteen years.
As a Latina leading lady with an immigrant background in the predominantly male video game world, González recognized the intersection between her own struggles and resilience and those of Kay Vess, and how this can be empowering to some fans. The actress became emotional when recounting an encounter with a fan cosplaying as Kay Vess from Outlaws, a moment that also deeply moved her Latina interviewer.
