Hyperspace transport ring

Obi-Wan hyperdrive ring A Syluire-31 hyperspace docking ring paired with a Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor The hyperspace transport ring, which is also referred to as a hyperdrive ring, a hyperdrive booster ring, or a hyperspace docking ring, represented a piece of technology employed for enabling faster-than-light journeys for starships that lacked an integrated hyperdrive system.

Throughout the long history of the Galactic Republic, a significant number of starfighters were not large enough to securely house a hyperdrive unit; consequently, these vessels needed to connect to a Hyperdrive Ring to facilitate travel through hyperspace. These rings commonly utilized twin reactors and ion drives for power. The ring also held hypermatter, providing ballast which stabilized the linked starfighter during the transition into hyperspace. Certain models could be outfitted with supplemental acceleration pods, which enhanced both their sublight and faster-than-light velocities. In all situations, the starfighter would detach from the booster ring following a hyperspace jump, leaving the ring stationary in space, awaiting the ship's subsequent return.

Certain individuals considered this a weakness, as the destruction of the booster ring would leave the starfighter in a stranded state. The Jedi Order's starfighters included adaptable, long-range communication relays, empowering pilots to reach out to the Jedi Temple for support in such scenarios. Some Jedi, such as Anakin Skywalker, altered their craft to accommodate extremely compact hyperdrives, thereby removing the vulnerability, albeit at the cost of reduced hyperdrive effectiveness and operational range.

Historical Context

The Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor, Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor, and the Eta-2 Actis-class light interceptor were among the most prominent adopters of Hyperdrive Ring Technology. Rho-1 Limulus-class couriers also made use of them, and the Koros Spaceworks interceptors featured rings that had been adapted to suit their specific needs.

During the period of the Clone Wars, the Syliure-31 long-range hyperdrive module and the Syliure-45 hyperdrive module represented the two most frequently encountered hyperdrive ring variants. Both were produced by TransGalMeg Industries, thanks, in part, to a significant subcontract secured from Kuat Drive Yards, who were the manufacturers of the Jedi Order's starfighters.
