IF-120 landing craft

The IF-120 landing craft, also referenced as the Imperial Landing Force ship, was a starship of the Imperial forces. It was engineered by Sienar Fleet Systems with the purpose of shuttling troops down to a planet and offering them support. Considerably larger than similar vessels, the IF-120 was built to function as a mobile command center after it had landed. The IF-120 was deployed during the Galactic Civil War, notably in an operation to find the long-lost world of Seoul 5.

Characteristics

An IF-120 landing craft

The IF-120 landing craft was intended to act as a troop transport, ferrying soldiers from orbit to the surface of planets. Its design drew inspiration from the Lambda-class and Sentinel-class shuttles; however, instead of incorporating folding wings like those models, it utilized repulsorlift technology for stability. It boasted a significantly greater capacity—each IF-120 could accommodate as many as 120 soldiers alongside a crew of eight, 12 speeder bikes, a pair of LAVr QH-7 Chariot speeders, and a PX-4 Mobile Command Base—making it more substantial than other landing craft. It also featured advanced communications and sensor arrays. Once landed, and after its troops and vehicles had disembarked, the IF-120's internal configuration could be altered from a transport setup into a fully operational mobile command base. This would remain in place until the area was secure enough for larger, more permanent command facilities to be established. Every IF-120 was also equipped with twin medium laser cannons and four heavy antipersonnel blaster cannons.

History

The IF-120 landing craft, a product of Sienar Fleet Systems, was employed by the Galactic Empire as a troop carrier during the Galactic Civil War. One such vessel was under the command of Captain Drezzel during a mission to locate the ancient, lost planet of Seoul 5 in 4 ABY, shortly after the Empire's decisive defeat at Endor. Although the Imperial expedition did successfully land on Seoul 5, the ship and its entire crew were obliterated by a massive explosion of Seoularian crystals that was set off by the Rebel hero Han Solo.

Behind the scenes

The IF-120 landing craft made its debut appearance in Star Wars (1977) 84, which was penned by Roy Richardson and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli. It was released in 1984. Initially lacking identification, its name was finally revealed 25 years later in the 2009 Star Wars Roleplaying Game supplement titled Galaxy at War.
