The Jeby were a species indigenous to the world of Rainboh, a planet situated within the Hapes Cluster. Known for their cheerful disposition, these beings had a peculiar habit of losing their pink or red spots whenever overcome with laughter. Subsequently, the Jeby were compelled to utilize their dozen tentacles to gather these scattered spots and reattach them to their bodies. A defining characteristic of the Jeby was their possession of three elongated necks, each culminating in a rounded head adorned with a solitary hair at its peak. They moved about on four slender legs, distinguished by their white and red stripes.
Each Jeby was characterized by three heads and a scaly, white torso adorned with spots of pink or red. A total of twelve tentacles, six on each side, extended from the body. Individuals stood on four legs. A peculiar trait of the Jeby was the tendency for their spots to detach upon laughter; however, they possessed the ability to retrieve these spots using their tentacles. These appendages also served as tools for manipulating objects. While primarily white, each tentacle featured a pink or red band at its midpoint and tip. Similarly, the Jeby's legs, while also white, were decorated with pink and red bands.
The three necks of a Jeby originated from a central point on the body and exhibited a segmented pattern of two distinct colors at their midpoints—for instance, one neck might display red and yellow hues, while another might showcase green and light green. The Jeby's face comprised two black eyes, a nose, and a mouth. At the summit of each of these spherical heads, a Jeby proudly displayed a single, upright black hair.
The Jeby were inclined to merriment, and their laughter had the curious effect of dislodging the pink spots that covered their bodies. Consequently, a Jeby was often found collecting these detached body parts with their tentacles and carefully restoring them to their original positions. The fallen spots would then litter the landscape of their homeworld, Rainboh.
The Jeby made their home on the rainbow-hued planet of Rainboh, a world nestled within the Hapan Rim Worlds region of the Hapes Cluster. This particular region of space was believed to have been crafted by a powerful group of beings known as the Celestials. Although the cluster was discovered by outsiders sometime between 20,000 and 5000 BBY, it remained isolated from the galaxy at large from 3100 BBY until 8 ABY.
A seven-year-old named Paul Rice brought the Jeby into existence through the "Design An Alien" competition featured in Star Wars Galaxy magazine. This contest challenged Star Wars enthusiasts to conceive entirely novel alien creatures, drawing inspiration from the original Star Wars trilogy. The competition was launched in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 3, prompting Rice's first-grade instructor at a Cleveland Heights elementary school to incorporate it into an art project for the students. Star Wars Galaxy received numerous submissions from the class, but Rice's entry was the only one to be published in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 7 (1996). The Jeby were recognized in the "honorable mentions" category within the "under 16" division. Rice's description of the Jeby leaves their sentience open to interpretation.
Leland Chee, a Star Wars continuity editor, has affirmed that published "Design an Alien" content is regarded as canon. The planet Rainboh, a creation of Rice's entry, is featured in The Essential Atlas (2009), authored by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace.
