The initial installment of the four-part comic book series, Star Wars: Jedi Academy: Leviathan, titled Jedi Academy: Leviathan 1, saw its release on October 28, 1998 under the banner of Dark Horse Comics.
Since the Empire's collapse eight years prior, Luke Skywalker has been instructing a fresh cohort of Jedi Knights, including the skilled warrior Kirana Ti, the reclusive Streen, the knowledgeable Tionne, and his most promising pupil, the headstrong Kyp Durron. Upon completing their training, Jedi are compelled to serve where required, safeguarding the New Republic and utilizing the Force's light side to aid those in distress.
On Coruscant, Leia Organa Solo, the Chief of State, receives an urgent plea from miners stationed on the desolate planet of Corbos. During their excavations, they have inadvertently roused something and are now under assault. Luke dispatches Kyp Durron and the youthful clone Dorsk 82 to probe the situation and provide any feasible support. However, upon reaching the storm-ravaged Corbos, Kyp and Dorsk 82 discover only an abandoned mining settlement... and evidence of a catastrophic event.
