Jedi Knight acceleration program

The Jedi Knight acceleration program represented an effort by the Jedi High Council to expedite the Knighthood process for select Jedi Padawans.

History

Back in 23 BBY, the Jedi High Council, responding to the growing influence of dark side power across the galaxy and the dwindling number of Jedi Order peacekeepers, launched a new program. This program aimed to accelerate certain Jedi learners toward Jedi Knighthood. Master Mace Windu stated that participants, chosen based on their overall preparedness, would be eligible to undertake the Jedi trials significantly sooner than standard Jedi progression allowed.

The initial group to learn about this new program comprised the eight Jedi selected for a special task force dispatched to Korriban. Their mission was to locate and capture the galactic criminals Granta Omega and Jenna Zan Arbor, as the potential alliance between these criminals and the emerging Sith posed too great a threat to ignore.

This Knighthood acceleration program served as a proactive strategy to limit the damage already caused by dark side operatives, such as the recent attack on the Senate Building, and to prevent further dark side infiltration. Given the significance of this initiative, the Council proceeded deliberately, choosing one "test case". Following extensive discussions and consultations with all Jedi Masters, the High Council designated Ferus Olin, the apprentice of Master Siri Tachi, as the first Padawan to undergo the trials ahead of schedule.

When announcing the decision, the Jedi Council took pains to emphasize that their unanimous choice did not reflect negatively on any other Padawan's ability to become a Jedi Knight. They expressed confidence in all their apprentices and simply sought a starting point to address the urgent need for a stronger Jedi presence in the galaxy, with Olin leading the way. They noted that each Padawan would be ready in their own time.

However, after the Council became concerned about the actions of some Korriban team members, which led to the death of fellow Padawan Darra Thel-Tanis, the Jedi Knight acceleration program was terminated. Adi Gallia, a member of the Jedi High Council, announced the decision, which Master Oppo Rancisis attributed to the Council's realization that they could not "force readiness." Grand Master Yoda acknowledged that the initiative was "their mistake," a type of error that "they could not afford" in such dangerous times. Consequently, the traditional timeline for achieving Jedi Knighthood was upheld.

A regrettable postscript to this short-lived program was the resignation of its first and only candidate, Ferus Olin, from the Jedi Order. He felt responsible for the death of Thel-Tanis due to his involvement. The Padawan truly responsible for both tragedies was Anakin Skywalker, the envious 18-year-old apprentice of Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. As the "Chosen One" of ancient Jedi prophecy, Skywalker had recently desired to be "first" in everything, not just his personal and recreational pursuits. Although Skywalker excelled in his class and in lightsaber training, he even claimed to be "First in the Force" before his Master.
