Kamino uprising

The Kaminoan revolt unfolded in 12 BBY on the oceanic world of Kamino. This planet served as the birthplace of the Grand Army of the Republic toward the end of the Old Republic. After decades of producing clone troopers for the Old Republic and subsequently stormtroopers for the Galactic Empire under the rule of Emperor Palpatine, a faction of Kaminoans rebelled. They employed their cloning technology to generate an army with the goal of opposing Palpatine's New Order. These Kaminoan insurgents revived the Grand Army of the Republic's blueprint, utilizing Jango Fett's DNA and outfitting their soldiers with phase I clone trooper armor.

Upon discovering this rebellion, the Galactic Empire enlisted the services of the renowned bounty hunter Boba Fett, himself a clone derived from Jango Fett, to infiltrate and sabotage the cloning facilities within Tipoca City. Fett's upbringing within the city provided him with extensive knowledge of the facility's design, enabling him to guide the Imperial Army to a decisive victory over the "anti-clone" forces. The Kaminoan leaders met their end when their escape transports were shot down during their attempted escape. Before the battle concluded, Fett secured a sample of Jango Fett's DNA and delivered it to his Imperial employers. The uprising prompted a revision of the Imperial cloning strategy, shifting from a centralized cloning system to a more decentralized approach involving multiple cloning centers and diverse genetic templates.

Prelude

In the years following the Empire's ascent, Emperor Palpatine maintained close surveillance over Kamino to ensure that the planet's cloning capabilities remained firmly under Imperial control. A small group of Kaminoans, specifically Clone Masters, harboring resentment towards the Empire's presence, initiated the development of a clone trooper army to challenge their oppressors. These renegade clone troopers, designated as clone anti-Imperial troopers, were specifically engineered to fight against the Empire. They were equipped with Phase I clone trooper armor and primarily consisted of Jet Troopers and Rail ARC Commandos. This conflict pitted these Kamino-bred troops against their Imperial counterparts: members of the 501st Legion of stormtroopers, led by the bounty hunter Boba Fett, whose upbringing on Kamino granted him extensive knowledge of the facility.

The battle

Imperial forces disembarked in the city using a Sentinel-class landing craft. Boba Fett, hired due to his familiarity with the cloning facility, advanced towards the facility and destroyed a door control panel that had locked down the facility. He then entered, eliminating any rogue clones in his path. Fett and his troops then received orders to recover a Template Sample of Jango Fett's DNA to prevent the Kaminoans from cloning more rogue soldiers. After securing the sample, Fett returned it to the Landing Craft, which promptly departed. The bounty hunter then went back to the facility and destroyed the life support systems in the lower cloning center, preventing any further production of anti-Imperial clones. Simultaneously, his fellow Imperial stormtroopers engaged the enemy clones on the numerous platforms of Tipoca City.

After completing his mission in the cloning facilities, Fett rejoined the troopers outside and assisted them in the ongoing battle. Shortly after the clone life support was destroyed, the remaining anti-Imperial troopers were forced back onto the landing platforms and ultimately eliminated. The leaders of the Kaminoan rebels attempted to escape in two LAAT/is, but were shot down by rockets fired from Imperial shock troopers and ground-based laser turrets.

Aftermath

With the rebellious clones eliminated, Kamino remained under Imperial control, and the rogue cloning facilities were seized by the Empire. The surviving leaders of the Kaminoan resistance were apprehended and imprisoned aboard the Death Star. Most of them would later join Rebel prisoners and perish during the Death Star Uprising.

Although the clone rebellion was decisively suppressed, the incident led Emperor Palpatine to authorize the creation of new clones from diverse templates and the recruitment of naturally born soldiers to bolster the ranks of the Stormtrooper Corps. He also reasoned that non-birth-born troopers were excessively vulnerable to corruption, and a more diverse group of soldiers would mitigate this issue. While the Jango Fett template would still be utilized, the Fett clones, particularly the members of the 501st who defeated the rebel clones, would struggle to adapt to the increasing diversity within the army ranks that they had once dominated.

Behind the scenes

The Kamino uprising was first depicted in the 2005 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Battlefront II as the fourth mission in the Empire segment of the "Rise of the Empire" campaign. The event received subsequent mentions in the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force novel series.
