A reporter for the Galactic News Network, Kella Rand, is reporting on an upcoming vote concerning an alliance between the Indu San system and the New Republic. Just prior to the vote on Indu San, the Chief Councilor, Shek Barayel, is killed by an explosion. Kella, hoping to break a major story, observes a Council Authority Officer shadowing the Ambassadorial Aide to Dictio L'varren, Tev Aden, down a corridor. Rand makes the decision to follow, but is intercepted by another Authority Officer. After a blaster shot rings out from the hallway, she and the guard go to investigate. They discover Aden deceased, having been shot by Officer Kaleb Darme. Rand briefly sees Darme taking a detonator from Aden's corpse.
Back at the Indu GNN bureau, Rand reviews previous interviews. During this process, she spots a frame of Darme placing the bomb responsible for Barayel's death. She shows this to the other reporters—Crislyn, Juloff, and her supervisor, Robbe Nostler—and then sets out to share the evidence with Ambassador L'varren. During her journey, a sniper fires multiple shots at her, but she briefly escapes the danger. Upon arriving at L'varren's hotel, she notices Juloff and Darme together, realizing that Juloff—still loyal to the Galactic Empire—informed Darme. She rushes to Suite 44-1 and dispatches her hovercam ahead carrying the evidence. However, Darme manages to intercept Rand before she can reach L'varren's suite. He forces her into the turbolift, threatens her with a vibroknife, confiscates her datacards, and shoots her with a stun bolt. As he flees the turbolift, L'varren's security, having seen the evidence, apprehend Darme and rescue Rand. Rand, eager to meet her deadline, quickly leaves to file her new story.
