Kettch's Drill

Kettch's Drill, a starfighter tactic, was conceived by Commander Wedge Antilles and carried out by the Hawk-Bats in 7 ABY during the Battle of Kuat. It gained its humorous name from Lieutenant Kettch, an Ewok doll that was presented as a functioning Hawk-Bat member. To maintain the illusion that he was a Hawk-Bat pirate, Antilles had to fasten the doll to the front of his pilot suit. This ensured that any ships approaching close enough to see into the cockpit of his TIE/IN interceptor would be convinced an Ewok was at the controls.

The strategy involved the Hawk-Bats directly attacking each enemy fighter squadron wave upon initial engagement during the battle. Instead of disengaging after the first wave to engage in dogfights with that squadron, they pressed the attack. Anticipating a larger number of enemy fighters, the Hawk-Bats only needed to employ this tactic against the three TIE squadrons launched by the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Mauler, which was only half of the warship's total starfighter capacity. The scheme was discontinued before a fourth and final wave could attack.

The strategy was a success. The Hawk-Bats successfully destroyed several enemy fighters before the dogfight began. Furthermore, they successfully kept the Mauler's squadrons away from Warlord Zsinj's combatants.
