Kyli Ned'Ix

Kyli Ned'Ix, a Verpine male, was both an adventurer and a technician. Gifted with the ability to repair or alter almost any kind of technology, Ned'Ix's journey led him to the planet of Kal'Shebbol in the Kathol sector, situated within the Outer Rim Territories, during 8 ABY. After the liberation of Kal'Shebbol by the New Republic, Ned'Ix sought to become a member of the crew aboard the CR90 corvette named FarStar. This vessel was assigned the task of tracking down Moff Kentor Sarne, a renegade Imperial warlord who had escaped Kal'Shebbol along with his forces. Despite Ned'Ix's remarkable technical prowess, the corvette's commanding officers believed that his tendency to improvise repairs posed a greater risk than benefit, leading to his rejection. Not discouraged, Ned'Ix took an abandoned Ghtroc Industries Class 720 freighter found on the planet, repaired and modified it. Renaming it "Fxz'Et," he filled the ship with spare parts and salvaged materials, then set off in pursuit of the FarStar, determined to contribute to their mission in any way possible.

Biography

A Verpine male, Kyli Ned'Ix was a proficient technician with the capability to mend or adjust almost any device. He also possessed the talent to construct useful, albeit small, gadgets from discarded materials, yet he avoided creating any type of weaponry. In 8 ABY, Ned'Ix was present on the planet Kal'Shebbol, located in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories, during its liberation by the forces of the New Republic. Moff Kentor Sarne, the Imperial warlord in charge, was compelled to abandon his capital and retreated further into the sector with the majority of his military forces. Recognizing the continued threat Sarne posed to the sector's stability, the New Republic sanctioned a mission to locate him, assigning the CR90 corvette FarStar to this task. Due to a shortage of available personnel, the New Republic had to enlist civilian help from Kal'Shebbol's local populace to assist in staffing the vessel. Upon learning about the mission, Ned'Ix, seeing it as an opportunity for adventure, applied to join the crew. However, despite his extraordinary technical skills, his application was denied because the command crew considered his inclination for improvisational repairs and modifications a potential hazard to the ship and its crew.

The Fxz'Et

Instead of remaining on Kal'Shebbol, Ned'Ix decided to support the FarStar in any way he could. He found an old Ghtroc Industries Class 720 freighter that had been left behind on Kal'Shebbol. He repaired the vessel, enhancing it with discarded components from both the New Republic and the Galactic Empire. Ned'Ix gathered a substantial collection of technological components, including disassembled droids, fused turbolaser circuit boards, and ion drive power couplings. He equipped the ship with a small laser cannon and a pair of proton torpedo launchers. Naming the vessel "Fxz'Et," Ned'Ix took off after the FarStar, with the intention of assisting the New Republic crew in their mission, even if they were unwilling to have him on board.

During their months-long mission, Ned'Ix encountered the FarStar's crew on multiple occasions. Despite his desire to join them, he was consistently refused. Instead, he settled for some recognition of his efforts when he proved helpful, as well as assistance from them in navigating the Kathol sector.

Personality and traits

Kyli Ned'Ix possessed a chitinous carapace that was green in color. Like all Verpine, this offered him a degree of protection against physical impacts. His eyes shared the same hue as his carapace, and he had the characteristic Verpine microscopic sight. Ned'Ix could communicate with other Verpine, and even specially calibrated comlinks, within a kilometer range, using his antennae as a natural telecommunications device. Ned'Ix was a resolute and adventurous individual whose greatest desire was to become a member of the FarStar's crew and support their expedition. Even after being denied a place on the crew, he did not harbor resentment and devised his own means of assisting them.

As a highly competent technician, Ned'Ix was capable of repairing or modifying almost any piece of equipment. He enjoyed creating new devices from the salvaged materials stored in the Fxz'Et's hold. His skills allowed him to transform a comlink into a jamming device. However, he was easily sidetracked when working on a new gadget, often indulging his creativity to the point of forgetting everything else. On several times, Ned'Ix would land the Fxz'Et on the closest available planet, regardless of potential dangers, or allow the ship to drift in orbit. Frequently, this resulted in him encountering trouble with local Imperial forces or criminal groups. He also had a habit of modifying equipment that didn't require it, often enhancing its power or utility but simultaneously making it unstable.

Ned'Ix was a skilled pilot and astrogator who could effectively fly small vessels and operate their weapons and shield systems. His technical expertise allowed him to repair blasters, computers, droids, space transports, and starfighters. He was also proficient in programming computers and droids, as well as skilled in the use of explosives and security systems. For defense, Ned'Ix typically carried a blaster pistol, along with his comlink jammer, a datapad, and a security cardlock breaker.

Behind the scenes

Kyli Ned'Ix was a character created for The DarkStryder Campaign, a supplement to Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games. Appearing only in the Rogues Gallery, his intended role was to provide comic relief to the adventure by inadvertently stumbling into delicate situations, and to serve as a gamemaster "out," enabling them to rescue players in trouble by providing helpful gadgets or guiding them to their intended destination. He was specifically mentioned in the adventure Shintel Downtime, where the FarStar comes under attack by Qulok's Fist, a group of bounty hunters working for Moff Sarne. If the players struggle against their opponents, one solution for the gamemaster is to have Ned'Ix arrive in the system and offer assistance.

Later, in 2010, The Unknown Regions, a sourcebook for Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game, namechecked Ned'Ix as a sample name for Verpine characters.
