Plot summary

The story commences right after the rebels successfully obliterate the Death Star. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo return to the rebel base situated on Yavin 4. Princess Leia Organa is giving the rebel troops a briefing. She explains that due to the destruction of the Death Star, the Empire is likely formulating a retaliatory plan. Therefore, all rebels must evacuate to their clandestine base located on Hoth. During this evacuation, Luke, R2-D2, Han, and Leia will launch an assault on a stormtrooper installation on Naboo. Han and Leia are tasked with enlisting Gungan Warriors, while Luke and R2-D2 are to pinpoint the base's precise location. In their haste to depart, they inadvertently leave behind C-3PO, who is initially disheartened until he discovers that Chewbacca and the Millennium Falcon were also left behind.

Han and Leia then proceed to meet with Boss Nass and the Gungan warriors designated to aid them. Luke manages to locate the Imperial base. However, as he attempts to relay its coordinates to Han and Leia, his position is compromised by a group of his enthusiastic fans. He makes an attempt to evade them, even donning a Darth Vader costume, but his efforts are futile, and he is compelled to flee the planet.

Concurrently, Darth Vader is seen confronting his officers, including Admiral Piett, Admiral Ozzel, and General Veers, aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer. Admiral Ozzel assures Vader that he dispatched probe droids to track Skywalker, but the droids were actually tracking Anakin Skywalker, who is Darth Vader himself. Enraged, Vader warns Ozzel that this is his final failure. Firmus Piett then mocks Ozzel, stating that Ozzel will fail them again if he continues to live, which leads to a fight that Vader ends. Subsequently, Emperor Palpatine makes his entrance and proposes rebuilding the Death Star using LEGO bricks, enlisting the help of Darth Vader and Darth Maul. Vader is shocked and displeased to learn of Maul's return. A sibling-like rivalry quickly develops between Maul and Vader. Vader eagerly seizes an opportunity to depart and pursue the Millennium Falcon, which had departed from Yavin 4 after C-3PO misinterpreted a message from Luke as a distress signal.

During flight, Luke's X-wing starfighter and Darth Vader's TIE Advanced collide, resulting in Vader's forced landing on Tatooine and Luke's crash onto a Star Destroyer. Still disguised in his Darth Vader attire, Luke is mistaken for Darth Vader by the Imperials aboard the ship. On Tatooine, Vader is captured by Jawas, who attach droid components to him and attempt to sell him. However, Vader utilizes the Force to break free and constructs a podracer to escape.

On Naboo, Leia, Han, and the Gungan warriors arrive at Luke's last known location, discover the stormtrooper base, and devise a surprise attack. However, Chewbacca and C-3PO inadvertently crash the Millennium Falcon, alerting the stormtroopers and initiating a battle that forces the heroes to surrender. Luke then arrives in his Darth Vader costume and orders the stormtroopers' AT-AT Walkers to destroy the stormtrooper base. He then attempts to leave with the "prisoners", but Darth Vader arrives, unmasks Luke and starts dueling with him, while the Gungan warriors, Han, and Leia, with the help of X-Wing Starfighters, fend off the Imperials. Darth Vader is on the verge of revealing his paternal connection to Luke, but C-3PO persuades Luke's young fans to harass Vader by showing them a picture of Anakin Skywalker at age 19, causing Vader to flee before he can reveal the truth to Luke. Luke and his comrades then depart from the planet, successfully destroying an Imperial Star Destroyer that was dispatched to pursue them.

Palpatine discovers that Maul, who was in charge of constructing the new Death Star, had designed it to resemble himself, which Darth Maul found "awesome", much to Palpatine's dismay. Vader's fans cause him to fly into the "Darth Star", destroying it, and the debris hits the Star Destroyer's view-ports, creating a vacuum that sucks Darth Maul into space. Overjoyed at Darth Maul's disappearance and the destruction of Maul's Death Star, Palpatine hugs Vader and praises him. In a manner reminiscent of the awards ceremony at the conclusion of A New Hope, Palpatine presents Vader with the "Employee of the Month" award. When Darth Vader's fans catch a glimpse of Vader's face beneath his mask, they are no longer crazed over him and chase after Darth Maul instead. Elated by the recent sequence of events, Vader pats one of the stormtroopers standing at attention, inadvertently causing all of the stormtroopers to fall over like dominoes. Palpatine exclaims, "Vader!" in anger, bringing the movie to a close.
