Mike W. Barr, born on the thirtieth of May, 1952, is an accomplished American author recognized for his contributions to both comic books and science fiction novels. Notably, he collaborated with Michael Stackpole on several installments of the Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron series.
The birth of Mike W. Barr occurred on May 30, 1952. His entry into the world of comic book writing commenced with an 8-page mystery story featuring the Elongated Man in DC Comics' Detective Comics #444, appearing in late 1974 or early 1975. Following this, there was a four-year gap before he contributed additional back-up stories for Detective Comics and House of Mystery, as well as writing Captain America #241 for Marvel in January 1980. By the middle of 1980, he was regularly writing for both DC and Marvel, and in 1981 he authored stories for Marvel Team-Up and Mystery in Space, alongside various Batman and Green Lantern titles, among other works.
In July 1981, with Legion of Super-Heroes #277, he assumed editorial responsibilities at DC, while simultaneously writing issues of Marvel's Star Trek comic, where he created the Native American character Ensign Bearclaw and a pacifist Klingon named Konom. December 1982 marked the debut of Camelot 3000, one of the earliest maxi-series, featuring artwork by Brian Bolland, a title on which Bolland provided complete artwork, which was rare.
In August 1983, Barr brought forth what is possibly his most enduring creation, the monthly comic Batman and the Outsiders. He was also the writer for every issue of its initial series, as well as its Baxter paper spin-off, The Outsiders.
His other contributions to comics include Mantra and Maze Agency, as well as the 1987 hardcover book Batman: Son of the Demon. The proceeds from this book are said to have "restored DC Comics to first place in sales after fifteen years." Grant Morrison has mentioned this title, along with Barr's Batman collaborations with artist Alan Davis, as significant inspirations for his own run on the Batman title in 2006.
More recently, he penned a two-part story for DC's JLA: Classified (#47-48, Jan-Feb 2008), revisited the Outsiders with Outsiders: Five of a Kind -- Katana/Shazam #1 (Oct 2007), contributed to Tokyopop's Star Trek: The Manga, and relaunched Maze Agency at IDW Publishing.
