The deepest of the eleven tiers that comprised Pau City was known as the Mining Level. It served mainly for the removal of refuse, as well as the extraction of bone and stone, with both resources being implemented in building projects. Located at the very base of this level were several grottoes, which were frequently visited by those who lived in the city.
