Prior to the Naboo Invasion, Finis Valorum, the Supreme Chancellor, dispatched Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas on a clandestine mission to Oba Diah. This mission, unknown to the Jedi Council, involved Sifo-Dyas traveling with Valorum's assistant, Silman, to mediate a conflict within the Pyke Syndicate. This dispute threatened to ignite a criminal war beneath the surface of Coruscant. However, before Sifo-Dyas could begin negotiations, the Jedi Council requested that he travel to Felucia to resolve a tribal disagreement. As he and Silman departed, with plans to return, the Pykes—acting under orders from Darth Tyranus, a Sith Lord and agent of Darth Sidious, another Sith Lord—destroyed Sifo-Dyas's ship. The Sith aimed to conceal Sifo-Dyas's role in the creation of the Grand Army of the Republic. The crash resulted in the Jedi Master's death, but Silman survived, only to be held captive by the Syndicate until the Jedi discovered him during the Clone Wars. Dooku, having obtained Dyas's body from the Pykes, then impersonated a Jedi and fabricated Sifo-Dyas's death on Felucia to cover up the truth. However, Sifo-Dyas's lightsaber was left at the crash site.
