Admiral Hirken's campaign in the Northern Dependencies
The campaign led by Admiral Hirken in the Northern Dependencies occurred circa 12,980 BBY. It was a key part of the Fifth Alsakan Conflict, a war between the Galactic Republic member planets of Coruscant and Alsakan, along with their respective allies. Hirken spearheaded a strong defense of Alsakani settlements located within the Northern Dependencies, with the theater of operations extending into Wild Space. The admiral made excellent use of cruiser-class warships, and the campaign ultimately proved to be a turning point in the overall conflict.
Prelude
From 17,018 BBY to 3017 BBY, the Galactic Republic's homeworld and seat of power, Coruscant, and the Republic world Alsakan, alongside their allies, engaged in a total of seventeen wars known collectively as the Alsakan Conflicts. These wars were fought for political and economic dominance within the Republic. Prior to 12,980 BBY, both sides in the Conflicts repeatedly attempted to achieve a decisive victory through the deployment of large naval forces.
However, neither Coruscant nor Alsakan wished to commit excessive military resources to offensive actions, resulting in infrequent direct engagements. Over time, the dominant strategies shifted to the use of fighter groups of large capital ships to defend the Core Worlds—where both Coruscant and Alsakan were located—and the deployment of fast cruisers to conduct raids and safeguard colonial territories.
The campaign
In the year 12,980 BBY, as part of the ongoing Fifth Alsakan Conflict which had begun approximately seventy years prior, Admiral Hirken, a member of a lineage that had been among the first to settle Alsakan, initiated a determined campaign to defend the Northern Dependencies region, which was under Alsakan's control, as well as the Alsakani settlements within it. During this campaign, the cruisers utilized by Hirken's forces proved to be exceptionally effective.
The battles of Hirken's campaign took place in the Northern Dependencies' areas of the Core Worlds, the Colonies region, and the Inner Rim, including battles in the Pyria and Twith star systems. Further towards the galactic center, confrontations also occurred in the Dachat and Sz Fel systems of the Negs region of the Core. The campaign even stretched along the Alsakani-controlled Namadii Corridor hyperspace lane to the Glee Anselm and Iridonia systems located in Wild Space. One particular battle of the campaign, fought in planetary orbit, involved at least thirteen military vessels, nine of which shared similar design characteristics but represented several different manufacturers.
Aftermath
Even though the Fifth Alsakan Conflict continued for almost three more centuries, Admiral Hirken's campaign in the Northern Dependencies was the deciding factor in the war's outcome. The subsequent campaigns of the Alsakan Conflicts largely followed a predictable pattern of raids and counter-attacks among Coruscant and Alsakan's colonies, punctuated by periodic ceasefires negotiated in the Core Worlds.
