Following the Great Hyperspace War, it was colonized as an early warning post for the Galactic Republic, supported by a self-sufficient military garrison. Over time, the colonists became isolated from the rest of the galaxy. After a coup led by Magnus, the military leader of the colony, O'reenian society evolved into a caste-based military dictatorship. This society was dedicated to military expansion and was governed by a leader who held the Magnus title. Only those who served in O'reen's military were granted full citizenship and associated rights.
Millennia after O'reen was first settled, the native people captured a corporate exploration vessel that stumbled upon their world. This event made the O'reenians aware of how technologically behind they were compared to the broader galaxy. To address this, the O'reen Star Corps began raiding nearby star systems to acquire contemporary military technologies. The stolen equipment was then studied on O'reen with the aim of upgrading the planet's own weaponry. During that time, various outsiders visited the planet.
During the Clone Wars, the natives of O'reen captured the crew of a Republic military exploration ship, which led to a rescue operation on the planet. Subsequently, the Republic Senate imposed a quarantine on the hostile world, which lasted for decades. Sometime after the disestablishment of the Republic, the O'reenians managed to steal a prototype tactical data core from a large-scale naval force. Their intention was to install it on a rebuilt battle cruiser. A team was assembled to recover the tactical computer and sent to O'reen. Upon arrival, the team infiltrated the Orbital Deployment Center garrison-city and stole the computer from an analysis station before successfully escaping the planet. As the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy, O'reen was largely forgotten once more. However, the ruling Magnus remained vigilant, waiting for an opportunity to expand the planet's sphere of influence.
O'reen was a planet located within the O'reen system, situated just inside the boundary between the Unknown Regions and the Outer Rim Territories. It possessed two moons and a gravity level of 1.1 standard. An O'reen year consisted of 355 local days, while a single day lasted thirty-four standard hours.
The climate of O'reen was considered temperate. A persistent, dense fog blanketed much of the planet's surface, interrupted only by the presence of towering mesas and plateaus. A unique species of flying creatures inhabited O'reen.
In 5000 BBY, shortly after the Great Hyperspace War, O'reen was colonized as part of the Galactic Republic's initiative to establish advance warning outposts beyond known space to counter a perceived extragalactic threat. These outposts were intended to function both as military garrisons and self-sustaining colonies. The O'reen outpost was under the leadership of the son of a Republic bureaucrat, while the military component was commanded by Magnus, a former starship captain. During the colonization process, numerous satellites were deployed into the planet's orbit to serve as an early warning network.
When the other outposts failed for various reasons, the Republic abandoned the project, leaving the O'reenian colonists stranded and cut off from the rest of the galaxy. Recognizing the colony's likely demise without strict control, Magnus orchestrated a swift and peaceful coup to remove the unpopular leader of the colonists.
Within a year, O'reen had transformed into a military dictatorship, becoming a self-reliant and highly disciplined military outpost. Magnus's coup, together with the planet's abundant natural resources, allowed the colony to prosper. His surname was eventually adopted as the honored title for the outpost's leader. Decades after the colony's establishment, the Republic's original purpose for O'reen was largely forgotten, and society became organized into a caste system based on military skill and the maintenance of the outpost's military readiness.
Several centuries before the Clone Wars began in 22 BBY, a corporate exploration vessel inadvertently discovered O'reen. The starship's captain attempted to impress the O'reenians with his spacecraft's advanced technology and claim the world for his corporate employers. However, the O'reen military, underestimated by the scouts, defeated the vessel.
This encounter highlighted the technological gap between O'reen and the wider galaxy. The ruling Magnus ordered the captured scout starship to be repaired and upgraded. The O'reen Star Corps was subsequently established. For centuries, they conducted carefully planned raids on nearby star systems to acquire new military technology, enabling the O'reen military to attempt to catch up with galactic standards of combat technology.
During that time, a starship's navigation error forced it to exit hyperspace, resulting in damage that necessitated an emergency landing on O'reen. After detecting numerous orbital emplacements tracking their ship via long-range scan, the crew skillfully managed to land away from the major garrison-cities.
Although they avoided capture by a local patrol, their damaged ship was taken to the settlement known as the Orbital Deployment Center. The crew then infiltrated the heavily guarded city and managed to avoid a shootout. They retrieved their ship and the necessary repair parts, fixed the vessel, and departed O'reen. After entering lightspeed, the crew discovered that several O'reenians had stowed away on board. These stowaways then attempted to kill the crew and return the vessel to O'reen.
On another occasion, an O'reenian hired a starship crew to transport a large shipment of undisclosed luxury goods to a contact on O'reen. En route, the crew discovered that the cargo was actually a large quantity of military-grade armor and weapons. Despite lacking the proper permits, they decided to proceed with the delivery.
As they approached the planet, O'reen ground control hailed the starship, threatening to shoot it down unless the proper identification codes were transmitted. The crew negotiated the right to land on O'reen. Once on the planet, O'reenians boarded and inspected the starship, confiscating the military equipment as evidence of a traitorous plot against the ruling Magnus. The crew was then required to lead the O'reenians to their contact before being allowed to leave the planet.
During the Clone Wars, a Republic military exploration ship was exploring nearby star systems in search of Separatist supply depots. The vessel discovered O'reen, but the captain's lack of first contact protocol training led to a misunderstanding that escalated into violence, resulting in the capture and enslavement of most of the ship's crew. Jedi General Morningfire led Vornskr Company of the Republic's clone troopers in a rescue operation, which resulted in the death of the reigning Magnus.
The deceased Magnus's successor was unwilling to risk another military intervention by the Republic. Nevertheless, the Republic Senate decided to quarantine O'reen to contain the inhabitants' hostility and prevent the Separatists from acquiring resources and military intelligence from the planet.
The quarantine of O'reen persisted through the Republic's transformation into the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, the Empire's subsequent fragmentation in 4 ABY, and its eventual supplantation by the New Republic. When the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy in 25 ABY, the Magnus chose to maintain a cautious and observant stance toward the invaders.
Two years later, the Yuuzhan Vong captured the New Republic capital world of Coruscant. In the ensuing devastation, all recorded information about O'reen stored on the planet was lost. Subsequently, the Magnus continued to monitor galactic events, seeking the opportune moment to expand their homeworld's influence in the surrounding region.
Following the Galactic Republic's disestablishment, the O'reen Star Corps conducted a supply acquisition raid, attacking a transport starship associated with a large-scale navy in the Outer Rim Territories, near the border with the Unknown Regions. The Star Corps stole the ship's cargo, which included a prototype tactical data core from a command capital ship. The data core, along with other military equipment seized during the raid, was taken to O'reen and stored in an analysis station within the Orbital Deployment Center. There, the tactical computer was examined by O'reenian researchers under the supervision of a military supervisor, with the intention of installing it in a battle cruiser undergoing refurbishment in O'reen's orbit. The computer was scheduled for transfer to Fort Maximus, the planet's capital.
Lieutenant Amalia, an attendant to a high-ranking naval officer interested in recovering the computer, hired a team to retrieve the stolen equipment. Traveling to the coordinates where the transport was attacked, the team followed Amalia's suggestion to examine archived and recent astrogation charts of the area, searching for signs of pirates establishing bases in nearby systems. They discovered evidence of the supposedly abandoned O'reen colony, although its precise location had been lost.
The sensors on the team's starship then detected an archaic transmission originating from one of O'reen's early warning satellites. Moments later, a pair of old O'reenian Star Corps starfighters, resembling those that attacked the transport, arrived and demanded the crew's surrender. After defeating the fighters, the team determined the origin point of the enemy starships and traveled there.
Deciding to exit hyperspace near the edge of the O'reen system, the team approached O'reen at a slow speed to avoid detection. Upon entering sensor range of the planet, the crew observed the orbiting O'reenian battle cruiser and the small assault group of numerous, antiquated battle frigates and repair barges surrounding it, speculating on the formation's purpose.
After landing on O'reen, the crew members disguised themselves to blend in with the natives and tracked the stolen cargo to the Orbital Deployment Center. They successfully bypassed the city's guarded perimeter and bluffed their way past the guards at the analysis center's entrance, where they located the tactical data core.
However, before they could steal the tactical computer, the station's military supervisor entered the room and immediately recognized their disguise. A shootout ensued, resulting in the defeat of the supervisor and the researchers present. The team then loaded the data core onto a cargo speeder and left the Orbital Deployment Center for their starship, posing as if they were transporting the computer to Fort Maximus. Finally, after evading the patrol ships orbiting O'reen, the team left the system to return the computer to Amalia.
The O'reen population was composed of ninety-eight percent O'reenians, a near-Human species that spoke a language derived from an ancient dialect of Bocce. O'reenian society was structured around a caste system and governed by a military dictatorship led by a single military leader, the Magnus.
Only O'reenians who served in the planet's military for at least six years were granted full citizenship. Those who did not serve in the armed forces were considered "civilians," with limited rights and often relegated to menial jobs typically assigned to droids in the wider galaxy. Visiting offworlders were automatically treated as civilians unless they could prove military service elsewhere or enlisted in O'reen's military.
Civilians on O'reen occasionally staged uprisings against the ruling order, but these were always brutally suppressed. Criminals were rare on O'reen and often navigated the fog-covered surface in their vehicles using sensors alone. This method allowed them to evade authorities but was also dangerous due to the risk of collisions with the mesas and plateaus.
The stringent social system ensured that every citizen on O'reen was a capable combatant. This discipline, combined with the military's ongoing efforts to maintain pace with galactic combat technology, transformed O'reen into a fortress world comparable to those of the Galactic Empire in the Core Worlds.
Most O'reenian cities, known as garrison-cities, were built atop the planet's mesas and plateaus. The Orbital Deployment Center was one of the oldest settlements and served as the planet's closest equivalent to a spaceport. Captured offworld military technology was stored and analyzed there, particularly in an analysis station located just inside the city's outermost perimeter.
The Orbital Deployment Center's primary function was to use orbital satellites to monitor activity within the O'reen system. Over time, these satellites were also used to identify potential targets for supply acquisition raids in nearby sectors. In addition to surveillance satellites, a dense network of orbital defense mines surrounded the planet, detecting, approaching, and detonating near any starships approaching without the correct transponder identifiers.
Fort Maximus served as both the capital of O'reen and its primary military headquarters. It was one of the most heavily fortified cities on the planet, with defenses capable of withstanding a years-long siege. The estate of the ruling Magnus was located in the city's center.
The city of Epsilon Garrison had a strong agricultural industry, contributing a significant portion of the crops consumed by neighboring garrisons. The agricultural output also supported the armed forces stationed at Fort Maximus. Despite not being as heavily fortified as the capital, Epsilon Garrison resembled a military base. Uniquely, it housed a substantial population of O'reenian civilians contemplating a global revolution to improve the lives of all civilians on the planet.
O'reen was first introduced in The Unknown Regions, a sourcebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game published by Wizards of the Coast in 2010. The roleplaying mini-adventure "A Fool's Charge" incorrectly states that the Republic outpost on O'reen was established after the Great Sith War, while the book's section on O'reen states it was colonized after the Great Hyperspace War. The Online Companion to the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the O'reen system, and thus O'reen, in grid square H-13.
Within The Unknown Regions, O'reen is featured in several adventure seeds for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game and in the mini-adventure "A Fool's Charge." This article assumes that all these scenarios occur as described. In "A Fool's Charge," players are presented with several options for determining O'reen's exact coordinates.
First, the characters can attempt to reverse-calculate the hyperspatial trajectories of the O'reenian starfighters, using their own astrogation charts to identify the craft's origin point. Second, they can attempt to salvage a flight computer from the fighter wreckage, connecting it to their starship's computer or a datapad to obtain O'reen's location, clearance codes for approaching the planet, and evidence of an active orbital patrol. Third, if at least one enemy fighter remains intact, the characters can rescue one of the pilots and persuade him to reveal the necessary information.
Once the characters have discovered O'reen's location, they have options for approaching and landing on the heavily guarded and militarized planet. They can emerge from hyperspace as close to O'reen's orbit as possible, risking a dangerous approach to the planet's mass shadow for a tactical advantage. If approaching from a greater distance, they can avoid the orbiting patrol ships in one of three ways: outmaneuvering and outrunning the patrol vessels, risking alerting the entire planet; locating and using an approach vector not covered by the patrol ships' flight patterns and sensors; or, if they possess O'reenian clearance codes, transmitting them and landing unhindered.
