Obas was an extremely hot planet of volcanic nature, found within the Andirma sector of the Expansion Region. During the time of the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance to Restore the Republic maintained a base on the planet. A malfunction occurred in the base's environmental control systems, creating a dangerous situation. The base was in danger of melting down due to the intense temperatures present on Obas. Consequently, the base personnel sent a group of Rebel operatives, who had just arrived in the Obas system, on a mission to retrieve essential replacement parts from a nearby Imperial supply depot located in the Rainos Cluster.
Simultaneously, an Imperial scouting unit discovered the Rebel base on Obas and deployed a heavy assault starfighter along with Imperial Army assault troopers to the planet's surface. Upon the Rebel agents' return to the system of Obas, they engaged the Imperial starfighter in combat before entering the base. After locating the power conduit where the newly acquired parts needed to be installed, the Imperial troopers, who had also infiltrated the base, attacked the Rebel group.
Obas was a terrestrial planet situated in the Obas system, which was a part of the Andirma sector within the Expansion Region. Its location was a mere two hours of hyperspace travel away from an Imperial supply depot within the Rainos Cluster. Obas held the second orbital position around its parent star, known as Oba, and was orbited by a single moon. The planet's local year was composed of 401 local days, each lasting 42 standard hours.
Obas was a world characterized by high gravity, intense heat, and significant levels of radiation. Its Type II atmosphere recommended the use of a breath mask, and the searing climate could potentially harm living beings even when wearing vacuum suits. Aside from its arid hydrosphere, the planet was primarily a volcanic wasteland, featuring mountains, rocky plains, and volcanoes.
The smuggler named Roark Garnet once stole several Elegance message drones from an Imperial depot located near Obas. This event was recorded by Garnet in the scandoc known as Cynabar's Droid Datalog during 1 ABY.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Rebel Alliance established a base on Obas due to the planet's strategic position within the Expansion Region. This made it an ideal stopover for Rebel spies transporting information from the Core Worlds to the Alliance High Command located in the Outer Rim Territories. At some point during the war, the environmental control systems at the Obas base failed, threatening the facility with a complete meltdown and endangering the lives of the personnel stationed there. As a consequence of the planet's extreme heat, several systems within the facility shut down, and all personnel were confined to the base's control center, where the remaining power was concentrated.
When a group of Rebel agents arrived at the edge of the Obas system aboard a starship, they received a message from the Obas base. The message detailed the situation at the facility and tasked the group with acquiring thirty KL-45 coolant hydro-valves from the Imperial supply depot situated in the nearby Rainos Cluster. The message indicated that if the agents failed to retrieve and install the replacement coolant hydro-valves in time, the Obas base was projected to suffer a complete meltdown in under nine hours.

Soon after receiving the message, the Rebel group discovered the presence of an Imperial scouting vessel within the Obas system. This starship was part of an Imperial scouting force tasked with searching planets in the Expansion Region for any signs of Rebel outposts. The vessel was systematically circling each world in the system, beginning with the outermost and moving inward. At this point, the Rebel agents departed for the supply depot in the Rainos Cluster, where they successfully obtained the coolant hydro-valves. While the Rebels were away, the Imperial scouting vessel entered the atmosphere of Obas. Eventually, a modified probe droid detected anomalies and notified Imperial authorities.
In response, the Empire dispatched a TL-118 "StarHammer" Short-range Attack Ship and a civilian transport carrying a squad of Imperial Army assault troopers along with a group of Imperial saboteurs to the Obas system. The civilian transport landed at the Obas base, where the Imperials forced open the main docking bay doors, allowing the assault troopers to begin searching the complex. The heavy assault starfighter, however, remained in Obas's orbit, where it engaged the Rebel agents' starship in combat upon their return from the Rainos Cluster.
After defeating the fighter, the Rebels' ship descended into Obas's lower troposphere, allowing the agents to visually confirm the entrance to the Rebel base. The group entered the facility and eventually located its control center. One of the base's technicians instructed the agents to install the coolant hydro-valves at a power conduit located in the facility's maintenance area. Upon locating the power conduit, the group was attacked by the Imperial assault troopers, who had also entered the domed chamber. Simultaneously, a stressed section of the chamber's ceiling began to crack due to the intense heat and eventually collapsed onto the maintenance area's floor.
The extremely hot environment of Obas prevented the existence of any native sentient species. Aside from the Rebel Alliance base, the planet lacked any form of government. The base's population consisted of sixty-two individuals. No goods were exported from the planet, as the base's primary value was its strategic location. Conversely, agricultural products, advanced technology, and medical supplies were imported to Obas to sustain the base's operations in the planet's harsh environment.
The Rebel Alliance constructed a base with limited docking facilities within a cliff on Obas. The planet's hostile conditions necessitated the implementation of several protective measures, including massive doors to keep heat out of the main docking bay and the use of coolant throughout the base's systems. The docking area of the Obas base housed twelve X-wing starfighters, twenty-four BTL Y-wing starfighters, and fifteen Z-95 Headhunters.

Obas was the setting for "Meltdown," a roleplaying game adventure written by George R. Strayton, illustrated by Mike Chen, and included in the 1997 supplement Instant Adventures for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The Essential Atlas, a 2009 reference book, placed the Obas system, and thus the planet Obas, in grid square L-15.
"Meltdown" suggests that the player characters could be temporarily reassigned to the Rebel Alliance base located on Obas. Alternatively, they could be permanently stationed there, and at the beginning of the adventure, they could be returning from a delivery mission to the Outer Rim Territories, during which they had no contact with the base. The adventure also provides several possible outcomes for the characters' mission to install the replacement coolant hydro-valves at the base. If the characters fail the task, they must assist the base's personnel in escaping the facility's destruction.
If the player characters successfully restore full power to the Obas base, they can send a forged report to the Empire, claiming that the base has been abandoned. They can then use the civilian transport used by the Imperial force as a distraction while the facility is evacuated. Alternatively, the characters can learn from the Imperial assault troopers that a picket patrol of two Carrack-class light cruisers is en route to investigate the Rebel presence on Obas. The base must then be defended by its own starfighter complement. Instead of an immediate military response from the Empire, the gamemaster player can have the other players address the presence of hidden Imperial saboteurs within the base. Finally, if the player characters prevent the destruction of the Obas base and keep it from being detected by the wider Empire, they can use it as a launching point for future missions.
