The planet of Obica, found within the Grumani sector, existed in the Outer Rim Territories. As the sacred world for the Spumani religion, it experienced frequent pilgrimages and even more frequent conflicts. In a past era, the Scholastic Guardians, who were affiliated with the Spumani, controlled access to Obica; centuries subsequently, during the time of the New Sith Wars, the Galactic Republic had lost track of the situation unfolding on Obica. In 4 ABY, as the Rebel Alliance geared up for the Battle of Endor, Syub Snunb, a Sullustan Home Guard officer, met with the Rebel Command Fleet close to Obica, and from that location, he guided them to the Sullust system.
Located in the western parts of the Grumani sector, within the Obica system, was the terrestrial planet called Obica. This sector was part of the Trailing Sectors region of the Outer Rim Territories. From Obica's skies, the Tanta Aurek and Tanta Besh systems appeared as a binary star, a phenomenon that influenced the naming of the former system.
There was a time when the Scholastic Guardians, a group with a formidable reputation, governed access to Obica. They rigorously interrogated all visitors to ensure their devout adherence to the Spumani faith, a splinter group originating from the Children of Mani religion. Later, by 1032 BBY, Jedi Master Vannar Treece documented in a cartographical survey and report on the Grumani sector that the Galactic Republic was uninformed about the current state on Obica. However, he also noted that none of the warring factions of the New Sith Wars considered the planet to be of significant strategic value at that time.

In preparation for the Rebel Alliance assault on the Galactic Empire's second Death Star battle station during 4 ABY, the entire Alliance Fleet was scheduled to gather in the Sullust system, located in the Brema sector, which bordered the Grumani sector. Syub Snunb, a Sullustan Home Guard fleet officer, was chosen to guide the Rebel Command Fleet to the Sullust system. To accomplish this, he met with the Rebel leaders in the vicinity of Obica. At that location, the Rebels thoroughly vetted Snunb, and after confirming that they weren't being led into a trap, the Alliance forces followed the Sullustan officer to the planet Sullust.
Obica was initially referenced in the Dark Empire Sourcebook, a 1993 sourcebook by Michael Allen Horne published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas specified the Obica system's location, and consequently the planet's location, as grid square M-17.
