Ord Pardron sector defense outpost

This sector defense outpost, a New Republic military installation, was situated on the planet of Ord Pardron. Subterranean in nature, this base began as a mining facility for the Galactic Empire. Later, after Imperial abandonment in 1 ABY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic repurposed it into a starfighter base. Known as the Ord Pardron Starfighter Base, it achieved considerable success against Imperial forces throughout the Galactic Civil War. After the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, and the subsequent founding of the New Republic, its role shifted to that of a significant sector defense outpost, fully equipped with starfighters, capital ships, and personnel.

In 9 ABY, Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Empire initiated a military campaign targeting the New Republic. He dispatched Imperial capital ships in task forces to attack numerous planets within the sector defense outpost's operational area. This was a deliberate strategy to divert military resources away from Ord Pardron. With many of its vessels and fighters occupied elsewhere, the base faced an attack from a task force commanded by the _Imperial_-class Star Destroyer named Death's Head. The base's call for reinforcements inadvertently exposed Thrawn's primary target: the planet Ukio. The ensuing assault left the base with substantial damage.

Description

This sector defense outpost, built on the planet of Ord Pardron, was constructed beneath the surface. It was originally used as a mining installation for the Galactic Empire before it was abandoned around 1 BBY. The Rebel Alliance then took control, utilizing it as a starfighter base. Following the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, it was expanded by the New Republic and repurposed as a major defense outpost. The base lacked a planetary shield, instead relying on the high concentration of heavy metals in the planet's crust to provide protection against orbital bombardment.

Occupants

As a key sector defense outpost, the base was staffed by 68,000 individuals. A full array of starfighters and capital ships were stationed there. By 9 ABY, the outpost possessed sufficient resources to engage Imperial forces in multiple systems throughout the Abrion and Dufilvian sectors.

History

While the Ord Pardron sector defense outpost was officially established by the New Republic after the Battle of Endor, both the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic had previously utilized the base. For many years, Ord Pardron had been extensively mined by the Galactic Republic and then the Empire for ores and minerals vital for constructing starships. Around 1 BBY, the Empire abandoned the base due to the depletion of mineral resources. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel Alliance seized the Imperial facility, establishing the Ord Pardron Starfighter Base.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Ord Pardron Starfighter Base launched numerous successful attacks against Imperial targets. Imperial forces were unable to locate the subterranean base to retaliate. After the Battle of Endor, the newly formed New Republic expanded the base into a major defense outpost. Additional starfighters, capital ships, and personnel were stationed there, with the responsibility of safeguarding New Republic assets in the Abrion and Dufilvian sectors.

In 9 ABY, during his military campaign against the New Republic, Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn aimed to seize the planet Ukio within the Abrion sector. To render it vulnerable for his forces, Thrawn divided his fleet into multiple task forces. Each task force received a target to assault, intending to draw forces away from the Ord Pardron outpost. The Imperial-class Star Destroyer Bellicose led a task force to attack Ando, prompting Ord Pardron to dispatch a counterforce. Similar attacks were initiated against other targets, including Crondre and Filve, leading to Ord Pardron deploying reinforcements to those planets as well. With the majority of its military assets deployed elsewhere, the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Death's Head and its task force directly hit Ord Pardron.

Ord Pardron requested reinforcements from other New Republic bases, inadvertently leaving the planet Ukio—a vital agricultural center in the Abrion sector—exposed. Thrawn successfully captured Ukio with minimal resistance, while the Death's Head and its task force inflicted significant damage on the sector defense outpost before retreating.

Behind the scenes

The Ord Pardron sensor defense outpost was initially mentioned in The Last Command, the third book of The Thrawn Trilogy. Its history was further detailed in The Last Command Sourcebook, published by West End Games. In 2012, the base received another reference in The Essential Guide to Warfare.
