A parang served as the namesake for the Parang Squad. During 88 BBY, Dooku and Sifo-Dyas, then Jedi Initiates, infiltrated the Archive of Forbidden Artifacts, a restricted area within the Jedi Temple Archives located on Coruscant; while there, they observed various artifacts, and Sifo-Dyas questioned whether he had glimpsed a parang.
The initial reference to a parang occurred in a flashback scene featured in the audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost, penned by Cavan Scott and released on April 30, 2019. The spelling of the term "parang" was officially verified with the release of the audio drama's script release on October 1 of that year.
