The Petition of 2,000 represented a formal objection, penned and endorsed by every single senator within the Delegation of 2,000, to the conduct of Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine throughout the duration of the Clone Wars. Furthermore, it served as a request for him to relinquish the emergency powers he had assumed back to the Galactic Senate after the war's end, which the delegation insisted should be achieved through a cease-fire agreement negotiated with the Confederacy of Independent Systems to bring an end to the conflict. The delegation's hope was that by ending the war, Palpatine would have no further reasons to keep changing the Galactic Constitution.
The reference to the Petition of 2,000 in Meena Tills's previous Encyclopedia entry on StarWars.com established its canon status. The Petition of 2,000 was initially introduced in Matthew Stover's novelization of the 2005 movie Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. A scene depicting the proposal of the Petition of 2,000 was removed from the movie's ultimate version.
