The Polar Sea existed on the planet of Jekara, and it was a sea. In the year 3 ABY, Darth Vader, the Sith Lord, found himself in a starfighter pursuit with Luke Skywalker, who was a Jedi undergoing training, around Jekara. As the chase unfolded, Vader and his TIE Advanced x1 wound up within the Polar Sea. Although Skywalker's scanner displayed the signal of his TIE, Skywalker was uncertain of Vader's location and believed he may have evaded him. Unexpectedly, Vader appeared from the Polar Sea, catching Skywalker off guard, and the pursuit resumed.
