Pulse mass mines were a type of space mine created by the Hapes Consortium. These mines, launched from pulse mass generator tubes found on Hapan Battle Dragons, produced false mass shadows.
The Hapes Consortium engineered pulse mass mines as sizable, silver spheres. Hapan scientists developed them using technology similar to the Galactic Empire's gravity well projector. Typically deployed during battle in space, these mines prevented vessels from escaping into hyperspace by creating a fake mass shadow. They could also yank ships from hyperspace, forcing them back into real space.
Hapan Battle Dragons carried pulse mass mines. Each ship had sixteen mines, with four deployable from each of the four pulse mass generator tubes. These mines could generate a false mass shadow for at least a minute before being depleted, and sometimes for as long as ten to fifteen minutes.
The Hapan military frequently used this technology, restricting it to military applications only. During the Battle of Dathomir, a Hapan fleet used pulse mass mines, a dangerous tactic that blocked hyperspace travel for ten to fifteen minutes.
The Courtship of Princess Leia refers to the mines as "silver orbs," while The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels identified them as "pulse mass mines." Starships of the Galaxy states that the mines lasted one minute before burning out. The Saga Edition of Starships of the Galaxy updates this duration to ten minutes, aligning with the weapon's description in The Courtship of Princess Leia.
