Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier

The Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier, alternatively known as the Quasar Fire-class bulk cruiser or the Alliance escort carrier, represented a versatile starship platform commonly employed for freight transport.

Characteristics

Flurry schematics

This bulk cruiser of the Quasar Fire type, conceived by the Sullustan conglomerate SoroSuub, presented a triangular profile, featuring the bridge at its foremost point and the cargo hold at its base. The cargo bay was adaptable, able to accommodate various freight modules or, on occasion, passenger accommodations.

Its armament consisted of two light turbolaser batteries positioned at the front.

Extending across the 350-meter length of the Quasar Fire class were light armor plating and shielding. While the standard configuration lacked weaponry, freight operators and smugglers frequently incorporated laser or turbolaser cannons. Typically, these ships were operated by a crew of approximately 250 individuals.

History

Despite their initial purpose as cargo transports, the Rebel Alliance recognized their potential as a relatively straightforward method for deploying starfighters to combat zones, providing them with comprehensive hangar facilities in close proximity to battle locations. The Rebels procured several of these freighters through auctions and subsequently transported them to clandestine Rebel shipyards, where they underwent extensive refitting over a period of months to transform them into starfighter carriers. Following these modifications, each ship could accommodate 48 starfighters (equivalent to four squadrons), an improvement over the 36 carried by other carriers in the Alliance fleet, such as Mon Calamari Star Cruisers and Neutron Star-class bulk cruisers.

When the Sullustans entered the war shortly before the Battle of Endor, they contributed eight Quasar Fire-class vessels to the Alliance. The Alliance then transferred these ships to the Virgillian Free Alignment, who were engaged in conflict with the Galactic Empire-aligned Aristocracy during the Virgillian Civil War. The Virgillians further enhanced these ships by integrating Imperial technology, upgrading the sensors, shields, weapons, and computer systems of four of their eight cruiser-carriers. These vessels played a crucial role in the Virgillian Free Alignment's victory shortly before the Battle of Endor, specifically in 4 ABY. Due to substantial damage sustained during the war's final engagements, the Free Alignment could only deploy two of their cruiser-carriers to participate in the Battle of Endor, including their flagship, the Flurry, under the command of Captain Tessa Manchisco. Subsequently, the Flurry participated in the relief mission to Bakura, but was destroyed by the Imperial frigate Dominant during the battle.

Given their effectiveness and vulnerability, Quasar Fire-class cruisers typically operated with their own dedicated battlegroup. These ships were dispersed throughout the galaxy and only assembled when the Alliance required a significant concentration of starfighters. By the time of the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance had lost two of the original ships, though many remained in service.

The Quasar Fire-class ship Battle Dog served as part of Group Two within the Solo Fleet during the pursuit of Warlord Zsinj in 7 ABY, under the leadership of Captain Geng Salaban.

A Quasar Fire-class cruiser known as the Thurse took part in a battle near the Bilbringi system in 25 ABY. The ship was commanded by Mak Jorlen.

Behind the scenes

In The Truce at Bakura, the starship Flurry was of this class, but its classification was not explicitly stated until the publication of The Truce at Bakura Sourcebook.

In the video game Star Wars: Rebellion, the Quasar Fire is identified as the "Alliance escort carrier" and is functionally equivalent to the standard Ton-Falk-class escort carrier, which are exclusively used by the Galactic Empire. Both ship types possessed identical gameplay characteristics, capable of housing six starfighter squadrons, but were susceptible to attacks from both capital ships and fighters.
