R8-series astromech droid

The R8-series astromech droid represented a segment of Industrial Automaton's expansive collection of R-series astromech droids. Production of this model occurred during the era of the New Republic, subsequent to the demise of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Notably, this particular R-series astromech stood out for its unique design, lacking a sensor "eye" and instead incorporating a small satellite dish on its dome.

Characteristics

During its development phase, rumors circulated suggesting that the R8 unit would be the pioneering Industrial Automaton astro-droid equipped with the capacity to communicate in Basic; however, the finished product ultimately utilized Droidspeak for communication. It was equipped with a comprehensive comm system as a standard feature, positioning it (alongside the esteemed R2 astromech unit) as a highly recommended choice for individuals seeking extensive long-range communication interface capabilities.

The R8's design emphasized the piloting capabilities of the R7s without being exclusively tailored to the outdated E-wing. It also aimed to incorporate the utility, adaptability, and, above all, the customizability found in earlier R-series droids. The R8 demonstrated superior performance in repairs, navigation, and piloting compared to other R-series droids, while also providing significantly enhanced software customization options. Furthermore, in emergency situations, the R8 possessed the ability to skillfully pilot small spacecraft (and mid-sized craft, if programmed accordingly) directly from its astromech socket or when connected to a computer terminal, although advanced dynamic piloting and intuitive thinking remained challenging. Similarly, appealing to smugglers, pirates, and others, the R8 could effectively operate the weaponry of smaller vessels, potentially rivaling the capabilities of a living crew member.

In terms of external appearance, the R8 bore resemblance to other R-series droids. Adhering to the "return to their roots" concept, the R8's head adopted a dome shape, reminiscent of the R2-series. Departing from the metal shells of previous iterations, the head and body of R8 droids were constructed from frosted plasteel, incorporating "gel"-style plasteel coloring for aesthetic enhancements.

History

Despite the moderate success of Industrial Automaton's initial release of the highly specialized R7 droid, the R7 line of droids eventually became obsolete due to persistent attacks from the Imperial Remnant and the subsequent war with the Yuuzhan Vong, as the New Republic's E-wing was replaced by newer models. Consequently, the company opted to leverage the versatile and potent processing capabilities of the R7 series while "returning to their roots," which served as the company's slogan for the new droid. This led to the creation of the R8 series.

Mirroring its R6 predecessor, the R8 achieved remarkable sales figures. However, prior to announcing the new model, Industrial Automaton undertook a significant risk by overproducing the necessary components for the R8. This gamble proved to be exceptionally successful.

R8 units were available for purchase at a droid retailer on the Imperial world of Bastion shortly before the Pellaeon–Gavrisom Treaty was signed. Lando Calrissian and Han Solo utilized these units to disrupt Imperial sensors that were pursuing them on the planet.

Behind the scenes

In the The Clone Wars episodes "Death Trap" and "R2 Come Home," Mace Windu possesses an astromech unit identified as R8-B7. Given that the R8-series was supposedly developed several decades after the Clone Wars, it is plausible that this unit represents an earlier model bearing an R8 designation.
