Raid on the Suprosa

The assault on the Suprosa marked a significant engagement within the Galactic Civil War, culminating in the acquisition of the Death Star II blueprints.

Background

Disguised as a fertilizer transport, the Imperial freighter Suprosa was under contract by XTS to move classified Imperial construction intelligence from Coruscant to Bothawui. Prince Xizor, the head of Black Sun, divulged details about this secret project to the Bothan Spynet, who then discovered the freighter's itinerary. Subsequently, Koth Melan, the Spynet's leader, passed this crucial data to the Rebel Alliance via Luke Skywalker and Dash Rendar.

The Conflict

Emerging from a concealed Rebel base located on Bothawui, twelve BTL-S3 Y-wings from Blue Squadron, crewed by Bothan pilots along with Alliance pilot Ace Azzameen, and spearheaded by Skywalker, Rendar, and Melan, launched a surprise attack on the Suprosa immediately after its exit from hyperspace. The Suprosa retaliated with a diamond boron missile, which was struck by Rendar, yet remained functional. The missile impacted and destroyed four Bothan Y-wings. The total Y-wing loss for the Rebels during the fight was six.

Following a barrage of concentrated fire that crippled the Suprosa's propulsion systems, the freighter's pilot surrendered. Consequently, Rendar and Melan, leading a team of Bothans, boarded the vessel aboard the Outrider to seize the supercomputer. This supercomputer was later found to contain the coordinates and schematics for the Second Death Star.

Boarding Action

Inside the freighter

Rendar breached the internal defenses and entered the hangar. An Imperial loader droid, typically employed for moving cargo within Imperial hangars, identified Rendar as an enemy and attacked using its spring-loaded arms.

Rendar destroyed the droid and opened the hangar doors, allowing Luke Skywalker and Koth Melan to land and secure the plans.

Imperial Counter-Attack

After the capture of the plans, Koth Melan informed Skywalker that the computer was encrypted and protected by a self-destruct mechanism, requiring a specialized Bothan team on Kothlis to decrypt its contents. However, the group was intercepted en route to Kothlis by the Immobilizer 418 cruiser Claw and the Victory I-class Star Destroyer Hunter. Blue Squadron successfully repelled the Claw, enabling the Rebels to reach Kothlis.

Consequences

Despite the apparent Rebel triumph, the engagement was a scheme orchestrated by Black Sun and Palpatine. The Imperial data on the freighter held the plans for the second Death Star. However, the plans were deliberately outdated, portraying the second Death Star as incomplete, contrary to its operational status. The Alliance's success in the battle deepened their trust in the crime lord Xizor.

The plans were transported to Kothlis, where Koth Melan and Bothan technicians began the decryption process. A raid led by [Skahtul], a bounty hunter, resulted in the capture of Skywalker and the death of Melan. The plans were successfully transferred to the CR90 corvette Razor above the planet, which was then attacked by Darth Vader aboard the Executor, supported by the Avenger. Vader's forces had arrived at Kothlis both to retrieve Skywalker and to maintain the illusion of Imperial concern regarding the loss of the plans, thus commencing the Battle of Kothlis.

Production Notes

In the novel Shadows of the Empire, Luke is given credit for disabling the Suprosa single-handedly, while in the video game Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, Ace is the one who disables the freighter. For the purposes of this article, it is assumed that both accounts are accurate, with Ace preventing the ship from firing its weapons again and Luke disabling the ship's engines. It is important to note that according to the SOTE novel, there was not enough time to notify Rebel command of the "Endor Project" plans being transferred on the Suprosa. Therefore there is no mention of Ace. The novel suggests that all pilots present, excluding Luke Skywalker and Dash Rendar, were Bothans.
