Randorn 2

Randorn 2, a celestial body in the Outer Rim Territories, could be found within the Rolion sector. Its landscape was characterized by swamps where the corrosive harrowbane plant thrived, also serving as the habitat for the large mollusk known as the ibliton. As apex predators, iblitons played an important role in the mythology of Randorn 2's native Mizx species, who saw them as embodiments of a malevolent mage. Sometime during the reign of the Galactic Empire, a team of xenobiologists journeyed to Randorn 2, where they engaged and killed an ibliton that was attacking a Mizx village.

Description

Randorn 2, sometimes referred to simply as Randorn, was a far-flung astronomical object situated within the Randorn system, a component of the Rolion sector within the Trans-Hydian region of the Outer Rim Territories. Its terrain included swamps and bayous, which provided a home for at least one species of tree and the caustic weed called harrowbane. The astronomical object's wildlife consisted of sizable avians and reptiles as well as diminutive fish and rodents. The hecxt and layall are two known species indigenous to Randorn 2.

The ibliton, a predatory mollusk measuring two to five meters in length and displaying characteristics of both cephalopods and crustaceans, occupied the highest position in the food chain of Randorn 2's swamps. Its soft inner body was shielded by a robust shell that protected it from both predators and the harsh conditions of its swamp environment. As part of its reproductive process, the creature deposited a single egg into the swamp waters, which then activated fertilization compounds within the egg.

History

During the Clone Wars, Randorn 2 existed beyond the boundaries of both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Fossil evidence suggested that iblitons had inhabited Randorn 2 for a minimum of six hundred thousand years before the Battle of Yavin, predating the civilization of the celestial body's Mizx species by millennia. Rex, the Human clone trooper captain of the Galactic Republic's Grand Army, was familiar with the sluggish mollusks of Randorn 2 by 22 BBY. During the Clone Wars spanning from 22 BBY19 BBY, the astronomical object was located outside the territories controlled by both the Republic and its adversary, the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Harzoon Parr of the Galactic History Foundation at one point proposed that iblitons had been introduced to Randorn 2 by a long-gone spacefaring civilization; this possibility, while unproven, intrigued xenobiologists. A group of researchers from the Tyberious Institute of Xenobiology once visited Randorn 2, where they recovered ancient ibliton shells from the celestial body's swamps. These researchers were also present in a Mizx village when an ibliton launched an attack. The xenobiologists ultimately managed to kill the creature, but not before one Mizx had also died. Subsequently, the researcher Meslinger witnessed the native's funeral, and sometime during the reign of the Galactic Empire, an entry in a holobrochure for the Tagge Holographic Museum on the planet Chandrila was dedicated to the ibliton, providing details about the creature, including its ecological role on Randorn 2. The brochure also cautioned that the ibliton could become a significant threat if it were ever to spread beyond its native world.

Inhabitants

The sentient Mizx species called Randorn 2 home. Being technologically underdeveloped, the Mizx resided in villages and kept domesticated hecxts and layalls. The ibliton held a prominent position in Mizx mythology, being regarded as an incarnation of the deceased evil mage Hershoon the Destroyer. Mizx children were taught early about the risks of venturing into Randorn 2's swamps. The natives planted harrowbane around their villages, believing that the plant, which they considered sacred, repelled iblitons. Nevertheless, three published accounts detailed ibliton raids on Mizx settlements.

Behind the scenes

Phil Brucato created Randorn 2 for the 1994 sourcebook Creatures of the Galaxy, which was published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The book featured an illustration of the celestial body by David Plunkett. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas located the Randorn system, and therefore Randorn 2, in grid square Q-6. Later, the StarWars.com Online Companion to that book placed the system within the Belderone sector. However, the The Essential Atlas Extra: Outer Rim Sectors feature of the Online Companion showed that the territory of that sector and the Randorn system's location—as depicted on a map in The Essential Atlas—did not overlap. Instead, the feature depicted Randorn 2's location as falling within the Rolion sector's territory, which this article assumes to be accurate.
