Rebel Bass

title: "Rebel Bass"

"Rebel Bass" represents a concise narrative crafted by Kathy Tyers. Its initial appearance was within the pages of Star Wars Gamer 6 back in 2001.

Synopsis

The story revolves around Ryley Ancum, a young musician skilled in playing the bass vye. He performs with a band called dusk and attends a highly regarded academy. Having been left by his parents, he also secretly aspires to be a Rebel operative. He cleverly hides sensitive intelligence within his musical compositions, a technique imparted to him by his instructor in both music and covert operations. Together with his bandmates, Hannis and Erik, Ry participates in an audition overseen by Keth Beamis, a talent scout who is also a Rebel agent. However, following their performance, both Beamis and Ry find themselves apprehended on charges of espionage. The governor intervenes on Ry's behalf, securing his release, but Beamis tragically takes his own life during interrogation.

Subsequently, the governor manipulates Ry and his band as bait to ensnare other Rebel operatives located on Beltrix III, dispatching an intelligence officer named Onjo Fegel to accompany them. During their journey, Erik creates a diversion, allowing Hannis and Ry to utilize a modified comlink and Ry's bass vye to transmit a coded alert to the Rebel forces, warning them of the impending arrival of Imperial forces. The message reaches its intended recipients, enabling the Rebels on Beltrix to conceal their activities and successfully evade capture by the Empire. While on Beltrix, the band auditions for another talent scout, and although they are not selected, Ry spots his mother and former mentor, both of whom are Rebels, but he cannot risk exposing his identity. Through covert communication, Ry receives instructions to return to his school and continue his clandestine work for the Alliance.
