Although its identification was initially unknown, the red ball jett organ made its initial debut in the cinematic production Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, which premiered on May 25, 1983. Subsequently, in a 2015 Topps trading card, the instrument received its identification as the red ball jett organ. The Databank located on StarWars.com initially designated the instrument as the red ball organ; however, this was later revised to incorporate its complete designation.

During a collaborative event with the video game Fortnite in 2024, the red ball jett organ was incorporated into Fortnite Festival as a Keytar cosmetic addition. The actual musical instrument also featured in a limited-time Star Wars-themed segment of the Jam Stage. Fortnite referred to the instrument as Nalargon; nevertheless, the canonicity of this in-game identification remains uncertain. Leland Chee later clarified that there are no strict rules prohibiting identifications originating from Fortnite, suggesting it is reasonable to accept it as canon.
