Republic Domestic Security

RDS, or Republic Domestic Security, functioned as a domestic law enforcement agency within the Galactic Republic. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine established it near the end of the Clone Wars conflict between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Distinct from the Coruscant Security Force, the RDS reported directly to the Office of the Supreme Chancellor. Its primary responsibility involved addressing security breaches committed by civil servants. The RDS conducted interrogations at their headquarters, and detained prisoners unless they were handed over to Republic Intelligence for further investigation. In 19 BBY, Agent Jilka Zan Zentis of the Republic Treasury Audit Division was taken into custody by the RDS for the alleged illegal duplication and removal of data from Treasury computers. However, this information was fabricated, and Zentis was subsequently rescued by members of the Skirata Clan.

History

Near the end of the Clone Wars, which pitted the Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Republic Domestic Security (RDS) served as a domestic law enforcement agency for the Galactic Republic. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine authorized the creation of this agency, which operated independently of both the Coruscant Security Force and the regular civilian police structure on Coruscant, the galactic capital planet. Instead, it answered directly to the Office of the Supreme Chancellor, tasked with protecting the Republic's most sensitive information from electronic breaches by civil servants. To achieve this, they maintained close collaboration with Republic Intelligence. The RDS also maintained its own prison facilities.

During the year 19 BBY, the RDS apprehended Jilka Zan Zentis, an Agent from the Republic Treasury Audit Division, based on accusations of illegally copying and extracting data from Treasury computers. However, the evidence against Zentis was planted to divert focus from Agent Besany Wennen, who was gathering intelligence for Kal Skirata, a Sergeant in the Grand Army of the Republic. Skirata and his clan had been monitoring information regarding Palpatine's clone trooper deployments and were seeking funds to escape the Republic. Upon learning of Zentis's arrest from Wennen, they devised a plan to liberate her. Disguised as a Republic Intelligence officer, Ordo, an ARC Captain, arranged for Wennen's transfer into Republic Intelligence custody. As the prison transport speeder departed the RDS facility, Sergeants Wad'e Tay'haai and Walon Vau, along with Ordo, launched a mid-air ambush, forcing the transport to land and freeing Zentis from the RDS agents. With the formation of the Galactic Empire, the responsibilities previously held by the RDS were reassigned to the Imperial Security Bureau.

The RDS was first introduced in Order 66: A Republic Commando Novel, penned by Karen Traviss and released in 2009.
