Sacheen-class light escort

The Sacheen-class light escort holds the distinction of being the inaugural ship class constructed under the New Republic's New Class Modernization Program.

Characteristics

These vessels extended 375 meters in length and were outfitted with a formidable array of weaponry, including 10 heavy turbolaser cannons, 8 laser cannons, and 8 ion cannons. Sacheen-class escorts were equipped with a hangar bay that could accommodate a single squadron of short-range starfighters.

Nevertheless, a significant number of these ships, particularly those integrated into group operations, experienced delays in receiving their complement of starfighters. The Sacheen-class boasted a remarkably swift Class 1 hyperdrive.

History

The ships belonging to the Sacheen-class, which were both developed and manufactured by the Republic Engineering Corporation, represented the smallest vessels within the New Class family that possessed the capability for sustained independent missions.

When operating autonomously, or with only the support of starfighters, these ships were frequently deployed for patrol assignments. In the context of a battle group, Sacheen-class ships were typically tasked with providing a protective screen for larger capital ships, or with escorting convoys of Hajen-class fleet tenders.

Despite being classified as a light escort, the Sacheen possessed the capacity to engage opposing capital ships effectively, thanks to its powerful heavy turbolaser cannons.

Subsequently, the Hajen-class fleet tender was engineered utilizing the same foundational hull and systems as the Sacheen. The triumph of this approach, which involved leveraging a common basic design for diverse configurations, led to its adoption for all subsequent New Class designs.

Behind the scenes

According to the RPG sourcebook Cracken's Threat Dossier and The Essential Guide to Warfare, the Sacheen is categorized as an "escort cruiser," although its size and armament render the "cruiser" designation somewhat exaggerated. Shield of Lies refers to it as a "gun frigate". Cracken's Threat Dossier also presents the only officially recognized visual representation of the Sacheen. However, akin to the images depicting other New Class ships, this depiction contradicts details presented in the Black Fleet Crisis novels, which serve as the basis for Cracken's Threat Dossier. Specifically, the visual disparity between the Hajen and Sacheen classes is significant, despite their supposed shared hull design. Consequently, many fans have deemed this image inaccurate and have disregarded it as non-canon.
