Samovar, a planet of the legacy variety, existed within the Western Reaches region of the Outer Rim Territories. Its position was noted as I-18 on the Standard Galactic Grid. In line with its designation as a Legacy world, Samovar was the site of lawful mineral mining operations. During the time of the Clone Wars, these operations found themselves siding with the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The Galactic Empire engaged the services of Ranos Yalli alongside Has Obitt for the transport of goods to Samovar, providing substantial compensation. While they enjoyed the fruits of their labor, drawing envy from fellow smugglers, Obitt would eventually uncover the Empire's actual intentions through Molo. The cargo, which had been paid to be dropped on Samovar, was comprised of obsolete Separatist weaponry, a ploy by the Empire to "unearth" them and strip Samovar of its legacy status. Once stripped of its Legacy world designation, the once-verdant planet was now at risk of being completely mined for doonium and dolovite, both of which were essential in the construction of the initial Death Star. Sometime later, Nari and Lyra Erso made their way to Samovar and watched the planet's devastation from the vantage point of space.
