The Sciuridi, although initially without a name, made their debut in "Charhound Chase," which is the first segment of the fourteenth episode from the first season of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. This animated series, shown on both Disney+ and Disney Junior, was initially broadcast on November 8, 2023. Its identification occurred later, specifically in "A New Discovery," the second segment of the second episode belonging to the second season of the same series. The design of this species is credited to the illustrator Steph Laberis. Laberis has stated that the species' appearance was influenced by squirrels, sea otters, and blue-footed boobies.
