Behind the scenes

Concept art for the lightsaber with shagreen

The first, though uncredited, appearance of shagreen was in "Lop & Ochō." This short film was part of the first volume of Star Wars: Visions, penned by Sayawaka and helmed by Yuki Igarashi. Geno Studio produced the animated short, which debuted on Disney+ on September 22, 2021. Before the short's release, shagreen was initially shown simultaneously in the original Japanese trailer for the series, uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of that year, and in the English dubbed trailer, which was uploaded on the same day. Zack Davisson identified shagreen in the 2022 art book The Art of Star Wars: Visions. Ren Ishimori designed the Yasaburō clan's lightsaber, including the shagreen wrapping it. Concept art notes for the lightsaber indicate that the shagreen originates from a creature comparable to sharks and stingrays. In reality, shagreen is a form of leather derived from shark and ray skin. In Japan, it serves as a covering for sword handles.
